Airport travel guide

Tivat is the main port of entry for visitors of the Bay of Kotor. Arguably the most scenic (and also most visited) part of the country, Tivat is known for its magnificent beaches and busy nightlife, but also its history. These are four of the most notable attractions in the area:
- Herceg Novi. Located right on the border with Croatia, the town of Herceg Novi is historical, scenic, and fun in equal measures. Some of the city’s most notable landmarks include the well-preserved old town with its Kanli Kula and Spanjola fortresses, as well as the Savina monastic complex known for its churches and the impressive view of the Adriatic Sea below.
- Kotor. Located right at the heart of the bay and giving it its name, Kotor is another small, eye-pleasing town that punches way above its weight when it comes to history and attractions. Kotor is known for its fully-walled old town — surrounded by impressive gates from three sides and mountains from the fourth, it boasts such attractions as the 11th century St. Tryphon’s Cathedral and the Maritime Museum. Kotor is also a jumping-off point for a boat trip to two small, but very scenic nearby islands, Sveti Djordje and Gospa od Skrpjela.
- Lovćen National Park. Named after the mountain whose appearance gave name to Montenegro, this is one of the most impressive natural areas in the country. Characterized by rocky slopes, thick woodlands, and breathtaking views, it is also known for its diversity of flora and fauna. Located just an hour’s drive east of the Bay of Kotor, Lovćen makes for a great day trip.
- Risan. Inhabited since at least the Roman ages and having served as the capital of the Illyrian people, Risan (historically known as Rhizon and Risinium) is considered to be the oldest settlement in the Bay of Kotor. Many historical landmarks, such as Fortress Šanik, survive in the area to this day. Risan – nowadays just a village of 2,000 people – is also known for the surrounding forests of the Bijela Gora plateau. The drive from Tivat Airport takes about 45 minutes.
