Knock might be one of the smallest places in the world that has an international airport named after it — according to the latest census, the village in County Mayo has 972 inhabitants. While it doesn’t take long to see everything that this cozy little place has to offer, it can also serve as a starting point from which you can explore the rest of western Ireland. Scenic and culturally unique, these are four of the region’s most interesting attractions: 

• County Mayo. If you’re arriving in Ireland via Knock Airport, you can’t do much better than explore the region in which you’ve landed. From the Museum of Country Life in Castlebar to the hauntingly beautiful Achill Island, Irish heritage to a good stretch of the Wild Atlantic Drive (often called one of the most scenic drives in Europe), it has plenty to keep you entertained.

Yes, the water can be cold and the waves powerful, but the magnificent, austere landscapes make this an experience of a lifetime.
• Roscommon. A long and narrow land, County Roscommon is located to the east of Mayo, and is one of the least visited regions of Ireland, which might just make it the right place for an off-the-beaten-path adventure. The landscape is rural and austere, the population is sparse, and many of the county’s landmarks, such as castles, monasteries, and pre-Christian sites, are in a state of disrepair after centuries of neglect, which somehow only adds to an atmospheric experience. The town of Roscommon, known as the final resting place of the King of Connacht, is only an hour’s drive from the Knock Airport.

Location

Knock Airport is about 20 km (12.5 mi) northeast of the village of Knock, about 55 km (34 mi) south of Sligo, and about 89 km (55 mi) north of Galway.

Services and facilities

Although the airport is quite small, you’ll find some coffee shops, pubs, and restaurants serving local Irish cuisine, as well as a few shops, including a newsstand and a duty-free outlet, which is in the departures area. There are also ATMs, a currency exchange in both the departures and the arrivals areas, a first aid clinic, a lost property office at the information desk, the Ireland West aviation gallery, and a prayer hall. The airport facilities are equipped for passengers with reduced mobility. Like any other airport in the EU, Knock Airport offers special assistance, but make sure to get in touch with your airline at least 48 hours before arrival if you’d like this service. Nearest gas station

Charlestown Service Station at Ballyhaunis Road, Lavy Beg, can be reached in about six minutes and is open daily from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. There are many other gas stations near Knock Airport.
