Airport travel guide
Knock might be one of the smallest places in the world that has an international airport named after it — according to the latest census, the village in County Mayo has 972 inhabitants. While it doesn’t take long to see everything that this cozy little place has to offer, it can also serve as a starting point from which you can explore the rest of western Ireland. Scenic and culturally unique, these are three of the region’s most interesting attractions:
- County Mayo. If you’re arriving in Ireland via Knock Airport, you can’t do much better than explore the region in which you’ve landed. From the Museum of Country Life in Castlebar to the hauntingly beautiful Achill Island, Irish heritage to a good stretch of the Wild Atlantic Drive (often called one of the most scenic drives in Europe), it has plenty to keep you entertained.
- Galway. A port city, Galway is known for its active student life, busy cultural scene, colorful architecture, and long, proud history. Galway is also one of the hubs of Irish Gaelic culture (even Galway Cathedral holds mass in both English and Irish). From old castles to great museums and a scenic promenade, the city is a joy to explore.
- Strandhill. It comes as a surprise to many travelers that Ireland is also a surfing destination! One of the country’s hubs is the coastal village of Strandhill in County Sligo, less than an hour’s drive from Knock Airport. Yes, the water can be cold and the waves powerful, but the magnificent, austere landscapes make this an experience of a lifetime.

Services and facilities

There are also ATMs, a currency exchange in both the departures and the arrivals areas, a first aid clinic, a lost property office at the information desk, the Ireland West aviation gallery, and a prayer hall. The airport facilities are equipped for passengers with reduced mobility. Like any other airport in the EU, Knock Airport offers special assistance, but make sure to get in touch with your airline at least 48 hours before arrival if you’d like this service. You can find more information on the airport's official website.

We picked up the car at Knock. Our first stop was Co. Sligo where we stayed in a B&B near to our family - we were there for 4nights. We then drove on to Donegal - a lovely B&B in the town (10 out of 10) only one night, so we will be back. We then drove on to Portrush - we had 2 nights there and it was superb - the countryside and Giants Causeway were stunning. We then headed south to the Midlands to visit more family in Co. Offaly. Total of 12 nights in Ireland and it was fabulous.

Knock, because it is a smaller airport, makes service quick and easy. We have travelled globally and find Knock to be one of our favorite places.

Knock is a good airport, it’s easy to navigate and usually fast to get through. The car hire options are usually good, but the cost is more expensive than other airports. The €10 fee to leave the airport is annoying. It’s a ‘suggested’ fee which is actually compulsory.

I only wish the autos could either be brought to the terminal or else a shuttle (golf cart) is offered to take us to the cars. We are older and weather is most times inclement at the airport making exposure to the elements to the cars difficult.

Never had a problem renting cars at Knock airport. Being a small airport everything is close to hand which gives the personal touch. Have rented cars from the different companies based there, based on price, and hope to continue doing so! Thanks
