Airport travel guide

There’s no escaping the fact that Frankfurt is characterized by the finance industry — its glass towers quite literally dominate the city’s skyline (which, according to many, is the most impressive in Germany). But the largest city in Hesse is also a historic place with plenty to offer in terms of history, architecture, and culture, as well as nearby places to visit. With that in mind, these are three of the most interesting attractions in and around Frankfurt:
- Frankfurt Cathedral. One of the most instantly recognizable landmarks of the city, the Frankfurter Dom, or Imperial Dome of Saint Bartholomew as it is also known, is on the bucket list of practically every visitor to the city. First built almost 1,500 years ago, but significantly reconstructed in the 16th when it acquired its present-day, Gothic look, the church is notable for claims of holding the skull of Saint Bartholomew, one of the twelve apostles, and for having been the coronation church of the Holy Roman Empire.
- Naturmuseum Senckenberg. One of the most notable of its kind, the natural history museum is also known by its German initials, SMF. The museum was established as an institution in the 1820s and moved to its present-day, impressive Baroque home at the turn of the 20th century. Welcoming about 400 thousand visitors every year, it is perhaps best known for the fully reconstructed skeletons of Diplodocus and Tyrannosaurus Rex, two of the largest creatures to have ever roamed the earth.
- Römer. Another ensemble of iconic Frankfurter architecture, the Römer is made up of a medieval town hall as well as two other historical houses to its left and right. Located just a stone’s throw from the aforementioned cathedral, the name means ‘Roman’ in German, but they are not quite that old – rather, the Neogothic buildings date back to the early 15th century. Nowadays, they rank among the most photographed places in Frankfurt.
