Airport travel guide

With amazing cuisine, a lively nightlife, and contemporary culture, Rome is a true metropolis in every sense of the word. There are even a number of lovely nearby beaches that you can easily reach. The number one attraction of the Eternal City, however, remains its magnificent historic heritage. Here are four of its most famous attractions:
- Vatican City. While you’re unlikely to get a glimpse of the pope (unless you attend one of his weekly blessings) and the crowds of tourists can feel overwhelming, the Vatican is undoubtedly one of Rome’s most important attractions. A country within a city, the Holy See is home to magnificent landmarks like the St. Peter’s Basilica, the Sistine Chapel, and Castel Sant’Angelo.
- Colosseo. Even before Christianity, Rome was already an imperial city and the centre of an empire. At the heart of it all was the Coliseum, an amphitheatre and a whole district that also includes such world-famous sites like the Palatine Hill and the Roman Forum. It’s a safe bet that even if you’re not a history lover, visiting the Coliseum will be an experience of a lifetime. Pay a visit to the most famous sites, but also check-out lesser-known, but equally interesting landmarks like Trajan’s Market, the underground Mamertine Prison, and the Theatre of Marcellus.
- Baths of Diocletian. In addition to politics, war-making, trade, and worshipping of gods, visiting the public baths was an important part of an ancient Roman’s life. Named after the Roman emperor who ruled at the time, this was one of the most famous — and certainly the largest — bath complexes in the empire. Nowadays a national museum open to tourists, it contains not only the ruins of the baths themselves, but also preserved frescoes, statuettes, and other artefacts.
- National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art. Rome has a true wealth of high-quality museums, and many of them boast collections of Ancient Roman, medieval, and Renaissance art. Equally impressive, however, is the main modern art museum, considered to be one of the best of its kind in Europe. The museum houses and displays works of such world-class artists as de Chirico, Monet, van Gogh, and Pollock.
