Do I need to leave a security deposit if I purchase Full Coverage online?
Yes, purchasing Full Coverage online does not remove the requirement to leave a security deposit at the rental desk. The deposit is required by the rental supplier as part of the rental agreement.
Step-by-Step Guide:
You must present a physical credit card in the name of the Main Driver at the rental desk for the security deposit. In most cases, debit cards are not accepted for the security deposit.
Make sure your card has enough available funds to cover the security deposit amount listed in your voucher under “Rental Conditions.”
At pick-up, the rental supplier places a temporary hold (authorisation) on your card for the deposit amount. This is a standard procedure used to cover potential damages or additional charges during the rental.
If damage happens during your rental, the supplier may charge the damage costs up to the deductible, along with any related fees, as per the rental agreement. You can then submit a Full Coverage claim to request reimbursement for covered costs.
"I bought Full Coverage, so my liability is zero and I don't need to leave a deposit."
Full Coverage is a reimbursement protection, not a waiver applied directly to the rental contract. Because it is separate from the supplier’s insurance, the rental supplier cannot "see" our coverage in their system. As a result, they will still place the standard security deposit on your card at pick-up.
"I can just use the same debit card I used to pay online for the deposit."
Online payment methods are quite flexible, but the rental desk requirements are strict. The security deposit must be placed using a physical credit card in the Main Driver’s name, regardless of who paid for the booking online.
"The rental agent said my Full Coverage is invalid and won't work."
When rental agents say this, they usually mean that our coverage cannot replace their deposit requirement. Your Full Coverage still remains valid as reimbursement protection for eligible damage costs and related fees. You can safely decline their extra insurance as long as you have a credit card for the hold.
💡 Did You Know?
Rental suppliers’ “Zero Excess” or “Super Cover” insurance can reduce your deposit, but it is usually expensive extras. Many travelers find it more convenient to leave the full deposit and rely on Full Coverage, which avoids overpaying upfront while still protecting you.
What To Do Next:
Check the “Rental Conditions” on your voucher to see the exact security deposit amount required for your car category. If needed, contact your bank before your trip to raise your credit limit.
