Best known as the location of one of the two international airports in Cyprus, Paphos doesn’t get as many visitors as other Cypriot cities like Larnaca, Nicosia, or Limassol. But while its charms might not be as obvious, Paphos has some aces up its sleeve and can also serve as a great hub for exploring the western part of the island. Here are three of the most interesting attractions in and around Paphos:
- Historic sites. Closely connected to the history and legends of Ancient Greece and Asia Minor, Cyprus is the location of many famous sites. The area of Paphos is home to the Greek amphitheatre of Odion, Paphos Archaeological Park and many other temples, villas, and ruins. Its wealth of ancient attractions has led to the whole city being designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. Relatively more recent structures built by the Romans and the Ottomans can also be found, while natural attractions include the Rock of Aphrodite, an impressive cliff rising from the sea that’s just outside the city borders.
- Troodos Mountains. Encompassing the geographic centre of the island, Troodos is the highest mountain range in Cyprus. With the highest peaks reaching about 1,900 meters (6,200 feet), the mountains are majestic and offer great views of the island and sea below but are, at the same time, accessible enough to be climbed (although, of course, you can also travel most of the distance by car). Made up of extensive woodlands, steep ravines, and waterfalls, the area is the best place to enjoy a long day outdoors. Mount Olympus, the highest point on Cyprus, is located about 75 km (46 miles) northeast of Paphos and can be reached in about 90 minutes.
- Monasteries. An important part of local life and culture, the Greek Orthodox faith has been the dominant religion of Cyprus for centuries. Its early roots are best exemplified by the island’s many monasteries, some of which date back to more than 1,000 years. Whether you drive to the nearby cliffside Agios Neophytos Monastery, visit the opulent Kykkos Monastery, or explore the smaller countryside sites in the western part of the island, visiting these ancient centres of religion and learning is a special experience.

Stayed in Peyia, Coral Bay and would highly recommend Oniro By The Sea for an evening meal, amazing place situated on the coat by the sea caves and a shipwreck.
For a beach off the beaten track away from all the tourists I’d recommend White River beach, great for swimming and snorkelling and managed to spot a sea turtle.

We come to Cyprus at least twice a year and have rented villas and stayed at many hotels around the coral Bay Area. I would only really suggest the coral bay hotel as the others are rated 4* but more like a 2-3*.
My preference would be villa rentals.
Lovely beaches and scenic areas for a perfect sunset. Personal favourite is the Sea You bar and restaurant between Kisonerga and Coral bay. Pricey, but worth it for the view.
I would highly recommend Tala, further back from the coast. Mario’s bar does a fantastic Guinness and the restaurants are great. It’s an all round beautiful village and has a personal touch that you don’t find near the coast.

Went up into the mountains, quite hairy with windy roads and steep drops. Main roads wide and easy to negotiate and clear signage. Went to paphos, coral bay, turtle beach, Paphos old town. Walked from Paphos harbour along the beach walkway, very plesant

car hire for 14 days was equal to the amount for airport transfers, having an hire car obviously enhances your holiday experience and even if you don't use it daily it's convenient and at the price I received from AutoRent Cyprus it was a no brainer.

As I was visiting family and had previously spent many years living in Cyprus, most of my time was spent with family. Malinda beach and restaurant there beside the St Raphael hotel is very good. In the summer months it is great to visit Troodos to cool down, many years ago the Venetian bridges were fabulous for cooling down and having a little paddle, sadly when I visited last year it had become very commercialised.

Very easy Rental car and value for money at 10 euro a day. Call on arriving at the airport and the bus came got us. The car had a very scratches but it didn't matter most of the cars in Cyprus do.

You need to get off the beaten track to appreciate Cyprus. Coastal walk from Agios Georgios to Coral Bay using bus form Coral Bay is lovely.

Picked up a small compact Kia from Paphos airport. Perfect for our stay in Limassol. 45 minute drive. Roads are very good and car was excellent.

Used car mainly for visiting family so lots of side road travelling, and relied on goggle maps on my phone,My only suggestion to you is to take a cigar lighter to usb adapter as the car i had didnt have a usb point .

Very easy to drive in Paphos, hiring a car is the best option as a taxi will charge you nearly 50 euros from the airport into Paphos each way, thats 100 Euros you can put towards a car hire.

We own an apartment in Paphos and travel to Cyprus for a month twice a year. (Apart from the covid period) Hire charges appear to have increased significantly this year. It is almost worth purchasing a car, the running costs would be so much cheaper than hiring over a 4 or 5 year period.

Because of the pandemic I only used the vehicle for short journeys but Paphos district is eady to get around and us full of stunning landscapes and pretty villages. Polis and Latchi marina are good to visit with lots of places to eat and drink.
