Airport travel guide
Best known as the location of one of the two international airports in Cyprus, Paphos doesn’t get as many visitors as other Cypriot cities like Larnaca, Nicosia, or Limassol. But while its charms might not be as obvious, Paphos has some aces up its sleeve and can also serve as a great hub for exploring the western part of the island. Here are three of the most interesting attractions in and around Paphos:
- Historic sites. Closely connected to the history and legends of Ancient Greece and Asia Minor, Cyprus is the location of many famous sites. The area of Paphos is home to the Greek amphitheatre of Odion, Paphos Archaeological Park and many other temples, villas, and ruins. Its wealth of ancient attractions has led to the whole city being designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. Relatively more recent structures built by the Romans and the Ottomans can also be found, while natural attractions include the Rock of Aphrodite, an impressive cliff rising from the sea that’s just outside the city borders.
- Troodos Mountains. Encompassing the geographic centre of the island, Troodos is the highest mountain range in Cyprus. With the highest peaks reaching about 1,900 meters (6,200 feet), the mountains are majestic and offer great views of the island and sea below but are, at the same time, accessible enough to be climbed (although, of course, you can also travel most of the distance by car). Made up of extensive woodlands, steep ravines, and waterfalls, the area is the best place to enjoy a long day outdoors. Mount Olympus, the highest point on Cyprus, is located about 75 km (46 miles) northeast of Paphos and can be reached in about 90 minutes.

The weather wasn’t very good so took the opportunity to do some sightseeing.
I visited the lovely village of Omodos which has the monastery in the centre and lots of narrow streets to explore.
I also went to see the flamingos at the salt lake next to Lady’s Mile beach, then drove back to Paphos via the coastal route stopping off at Aphrodite’s Rock then on to Paphos harbour.
I went to the Church of Agios Nikolaos Tis Stegis and the Church of Panagia Phorviotissa(Asinou).

This trip was to fill an ambision to visit Kyrenia, (Girne), Castle and Port in north Cyprus, I had first wanted to visit in 1974. Although I was staying in South Cyprus, at Pissouri Beach, It was no problem crossing the boarder in Nicosia and getting one of the "Dolmus" busses to get me there. The Castle was a wonderful couple of hours of history, and the port bustling even though it was late November.
I covered about 800km over the week, the car having its work cut out, from the heights of Mount Troodos to the more laid back Latsi Beach. Cyprus is a very easy place to drive and would suggest the best way to get around the Island.

My 1st time to Cyprus and I will be going back, very impressed. We stayed in 4 different locations over 2.5 weeks, from in-town locations, near to beaches to the Trodos mountains as well. It offers something for everyone and I would recommend getting a hire car to make it easier to get about. Pick the time of year you go as as it gets very hot in July/August.

First time to Cyprus and was hoping to experience some of the heritage, culture and history of Cyprus, but it seemed sadly lacking - probably disappeared during the war. Everything seems modern - villas, resorts, cities, marinas, etc. which is OK if that's what you want.
Found that Kykkos monastery in the Troodos mountains was well worth the drive - the restaurant close by provided an excellent buffet of local homemade food at very reasonable prices.
We were also hoping to get to Mt Olympus, but we decided against it due to the persistent cloud on the mountain top.
Some good walking trails in the Akamas national park.
