if you are looking for a quaint small town with restaurants and boutiques without the national store brands, I recommend Geneva IL. went there for the first time and loved it.

Be aware of Toll roads , some take credit card but don"t work. Some cash and some only coins. If unsuccessful in paying , log where you are, where you entered toll road, or else they will charge max toll fee, not just what you should of paid.

If you're staying and working in the outer more suburban areas I would definitely rent a car. The train doesn't operate between my hotel and work as it seems to be focused on downtown. Plus I like to shop at some of the excellent fabric stores when I'm there so a car provides a lot of flexibility.

Just allow enough time when picking up the car to take one bus to the O’Hare car rental center and then get on a shuttle to the offsite Routes rental center... not difficult now that I know how it works. Return car directly to Routes on Mannheim and the shuttle takes you directly to your departing flight location. If the price of the rentals stays good, I’ll rent again from Routes next year!

Check and see if you will be driving on toll roads, there are a lot in Chicago/Illinois. Be sure to have exact cash or pay $10 a day for an ipass to avoid extra fees when driving on toll roads.
There are a lot of rental companies and.you can find a good deal on a good car.

I stayed out side Chicago 3 hrs south. Driving in Chicago itself is quite mad to be honest. But when you leave the city. things calm down. So I'd say if staying in city definitely don't hire car. But if looking to explore outside city definitely go for it

Having grown up in the Chicago area, I'm still happy that I moved. I generally dislike the city, however I visit regularly for friends and family in the area. If you need to come to Chicago, rent from Routes!
