Although delayed several times, the Berlin Brandenburg Airport was opened in October 2020. It replaced Tempelhof, Schönefeld, and Tegel airports, with the latter two being closed for commercial passenger traffic shortly after its opening, and thus became the only international airport serving the German capital. The airport handled 25.5 million passengers in 2024, thus becoming the third-busiest in the country behind Frankfurt and Munich, and the 20th-busiest in Europe. The airport is expected to continue to grow significantly in the 2020s and 2030s.

The airport is made up of the interconnected terminals 1 and 2, and everywhere in the airport can be accessed on foot.

Location

The airport is not located in the city of Berlin itself, but in the state of Brandenburg that surrounds it, in the municipality of Schönefeld. The city center is about 25 km (16 miles) northwest of the airport, a car trip that takes between 30 and 50 minutes depending on the traffic.

Nearest gas station

There is a TotalEnergies tankstelle, or gas station, right outside the airport, at Elly-Beinhorn-Ring 2a, 12529 Schönefeld. This gas station is open from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. on working days and 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on holidays. There is also an Esso gas station about a ten minute drive from the airport, at Waßmannsdorfer Ch 6, 12529 Schönefeld (it will be on your right when driving to the city). This gas station is open from 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on working days and 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on holidays.
