Scenic, historic, and proud, the great port city of Hamburg is one of Germany’s top destinations. From historical landmarks to distinct neighborhoods, it promises plenty of excitement for any visitor. Even better, Hamburg can also serve as a base for exploring the rest of Northern Germany. These are four of the most interesting attractions in and around it:

• Rathaus. The most visited (and most photographed) building in the city, glancing at the impressive Rathaus at least once is the quintessential Hamburg experience. Although not especially old - it dates back to the late 19th century - the City Hall is an important example of Neo-Renaissance architecture. The building’s 112 m (367 feet) tower is so iconic that a good number of natives of Hamburg sport a tattoo of it.
• St. Pauli. Although best known for the red light district of the Reeperbahn area, there’s much more about this riverside quarter of Hamburg. Home to a number of subcultures, cozy bookshops, and a fun contemporary art scene, it is the city’s main hub of culture and creativity. There are landmarks like Panoptikum (Germany’s response to Madame Tussauds Museum of London) and St. Pauli Museum, and the area is also home to Hamburger Dom, the largest fair in Germany that takes place thrice a year.
• Hamburger Kunsthalle. One of the largest art museums in Germany, a visit to the Kunsthalle would be a highlight of any trip to Hamburg. Having celebrated its 150th birthday in 2019 and welcoming nearly 400,000 visitors annually, the museum showcases works by many world-famous artists such as Friedrich, Gauguin, Munch, and Klee. The museum is located inside the Wallring, the very urban center of Hamburg.
• Bremen. A neighbor (and sometimes rival) of Hamburg, Bremen is the other great northern city of Germany. A Hanseatic river port, it boasts plenty of history and culture exemplified by landmarks like the Statue of Roland, its own stunning city hall, and the many Art Nouveau (or Jugendstil) buildings of Böttcherstraße. A car trip from Hamburg takes only about 90 minutes.

The two airport terminals, T1 and T2, are connected to each other by the Airport Plaza facility, and there are also free shuttle buses running between them.

Location

Hamburg Airport is about 8.5 km (5.3 mi) north of Hamburg. Alsterkrugchaussee, Zeppelinstraße/B433, Bebelallee, Sierichstraße, and Herbert-Weichmann-Straße are the main roads connecting the airport to the city.

You’ll find plenty of restaurants, bars, and cafeterias, as well as many types of shops, including convenience stores, a supermarket, and duty-free outlets that are available to passengers leaving the EU. There are also several ATMs, a bank, a currency exchange, an on-site hotel, a children’s play area, a pharmacy, a German Red Cross (DRK) medical office for emergencies, a dentist’s office, laundry services, luggage wrapping services, pay showers in the Airport Plaza, a massage center, an observation deck, an airport model exhibition, rotating art exhibits by local artists, a relaxation room, and a prayer room. Luggage storage is located in the departures hall of T2 and is open daily from 4:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Hamburg Airport is equipped for travelers with reduced mobility, and special assistance is offered, but make sure to contact your airline in advance to request it. Nearest gas station

Shell gas station, which provides ethanol-free gas, is located at Alsterkrugchaussee 431. It can be reached in about five minutes and is open 24/7. There are many other gas stations near Hamburg Airport and on the way to the city.
