The capital of Barbados, Bridgetown is also the country’s most populated city and the main port of entry for foreign visitors. Most tourists head straight to one of Barbados’ many beautiful beaches, but Bridgetown also offers plenty in terms of culture and entertainment. These are four of the most interesting attractions in and around the city:
- The Careenage. A marina and waterfront at the heart of the city, the Careenage is both the geographical center of Bridgetown and one of its most popular tourist areas. Whether you come to check out historical landmarks like the Chamberlain Bridge (the first version of which was built by the indigenous Arawak people) or to enjoy the views from an oceanside restaurant, you’re going to have a good time.
- Nidhe Israel Synagogue. Built in the 17th century by Sephardic Jewish refugees, this pink-hued synagogue is one of the oldest in the Americas. The centuries have seen it survive hurricanes, be deconsecrated, and then be significantly restored making it the historical landmark that it is today. As interesting from the inside as it is from the outside, the synagogue is now home to the Barbados Jewish Museum.
- Nature areas. Owing to its Caribbean location, Barbados is home not only to pristine beaches but also lush tropical forests, something that should definitely be explored on a visit to the island. Located right next to each other and just a 30-minute drive from Bridgetown are the Barbados Wildlife Reserve and Farley Hill National Park, two great places to explore the island’s flora and fauna, as well as overgrown colonial ruins like the Grenade Hall Plantation House.
- Caves. Thanks to its geological make-up – it is largely made of sandstone – the island of Barbados is home to an absolute wealth of fascinating caves, several of which have been turned into tourist attractions. Arguably the most famous one is Harrison’s Cave and its surrounding eco-adventure park which is located near the geographical center of the island, about a 30-minute drive northeast of the capital. This cave is near the Flower Forest Botanical Gardens, so both attractions can be visited on the same trip.

Bridgetown Airport is about 20 km (12.5) east of Bridgetown city center and takes 30-40 minutes to reach. Tom Adams Highway/H6 and River Road are the main roads connecting the airport to the city. Other popular destinations of Barbados are also within your reach - Bathsheba is 23 km (14 mi) northeast of the airport and takes 35 minutes to reach while Speightstown is 35 km (21 mi) northwest of the airport and takes 55 minutes to reach with a rental car.

We drive to many of the beaches and sites across Barbados. The car was perfect for the gout of us n although our GPS wanted us to take a one lane dirt road as a detour to some traffic. At that point we needed 4WD!

Harrison cave was amazing and wonderful, the beaches in Holetown are very nice. Visiting family and friends. Visiting downtown Bridgetown was great. The ambiance in Oistins on Friday night was speechless. The fish fry was lit!

I return to beautiful Barbados every year. I married in 2001 and my husband is Bajan,he still has family in Bridgetown. I love everything about this place and we ate out at Tapas, Daia beach restaurants and harbour lights and so many more. We will return at Christmas , but might have to return soon depending on my husbands sister as she is in poor health and is 97. So we will be needing a car again and I won’t hesitate to use DiscoverCars.

Barbados is beautiful. But we found many of the places to visit were closed due to refurbishment, opening later 2022. Can't get much later than mid November. Parking was hard in Bridgetown. Better visiting other areas by car.

It is not critical to rent a car at the airport. For most locations you can get fast with public transportation. However it is very convenient to have the car from the very beginnig. Return is very easy.

Bridgetown needs some investment, but I love enterprise, accra and the beach next to the Hilton. Dont miss out on cuz.... he sells the best fish cutters on the island near the Hilton . My favourite restaurant is champers for both lunch and dinner. Another local restaurant near the Hilton is coffeys (local bajan dishes). If your on the east coast go to dinahs .

We always rent a car when in Barbados, as keen and proficient drivers we have a lot of fun every time because there is always something new to visit or find by chance.
The downside is the horrendous quantity of potholes/ broken or missing drain covers/ etc along the coast road particularly from the Garrison to the St. Lawrence Gap. Rush hour traffic times should be avoided if possible.
Local drivers tend not to indicate much....... but are often very courteous and willingly let you out from a side road. A single or double bip on the horn signifies thank you, not aggravation.

Very useful to have an air-conditioned car in Barbados. We tried to avoid the ABC Highway during rush hour. I would recommend that drivers keep their distance as we saw a few accidents and road users under and overtake.

The car provided for us the opportunity to explore the sites and the culture of this unique country at our own pace and schedule. I would suggest that the pickup at the airport is the easiest way to access a rental car. Do the research before attempting to drive there as the challenges of the lane reversal can be confusing.

We rented the car straight from the airport. The signs in Barbados are very random and it takes a while to get the hang of the major and minor roads. We used the Waze App for directions which worked well. We found driving in Barbados safe and pretty easy.
