Airport Car Hire
Porto, the capital of the Northern Region of Portugal, is a popular tourist destination both due to its cultural offerings and as a base from which to explore northern Portugal and its beaches and nature. With numerous flights, including many with Raynair and easyJet, taking Brits to Porto, it's no surprise that the city and regions are extremely popular with British tourists.
Most tourists opt to hire a car for their trip. What would be a trip to sunny Portugal without hitting the beaches?
Tolls: Most of the motorways in the northern part of Portugal are toll roads. Some of these are tolled electronically, meaning you can not pay with a credit card nor cash at a toll gate. This includes the A28 and A24 motorways heading north (the A24 to the Spanish border) along with the A28 heading south and the A7 that leads to the Spanish border to the east. While most of these can be avoided, do be prepared to accept the supplier's e-toll device if you plan to travel on these motorways.
Driving to Spain: The Spanish border north of Porto is only 120km from Porto Airport with Vigo, the first main city in Galicia roughly 150km from the airport.

- Costa da Prata. The Silver Coast stretches for about 240 km (150 miles) from the border with Spain in the north to Greater Lisbon in the south, but many of its most beautiful parts are located near Porto. Significantly more rugged than the beaches of the Algarve in the far south, the Costa da Prata is known for traditional fishing communities, coastal hiking trails, and great surfing conditions.
- Peneda-Gerês National Park. One of the most scenic areas in Southern Europe, Peneda-Gerês is characterized by its granite peaks, highland forests, and stunning landscapes, as well as man-made landmarks such as the Roman bridge of Cava de Velha. The park gives home to a large variety of species of wildlife such as the Iberian wolf, Spanish ibex, and Garrano wild horses. The drive from Porto takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Stayed at various Pousadas round northern Portugal. Lovely hotels, often in historic buildings. Viana do Castelo, Porto and Aveiro our favourite places to sightsee and shop. Estrela mountains and Geres National Park good for nature lovers and spectacular views, though more inclined to inclement weather due to mountains. Great experience.

We stayed one week near Santarem and visited castles, caves and swam in rivers. It was lovely, particularly Tomar. We then had a week near Geres where we visited waterfalls, viewpoints and swam more in the rivers there. Portugal is beautiful and the people were very hospitable, friendly and helpful.

We started with a few days sightseeing in Porto and didn't require a car. We headed into the mountains to hike, kayak and explore . We needed a car just to get around, buy food and see the attractions. After a few days we headed back to the coast for a days sailing and explore Porto once more. Beautiful city but be prepared to walk a lot. There are great restaurants we found the best of these to be on the other side of the River Doura where you can also appreciate the splendour of Porto.

The hire staff were great our pickup was late at night and there was a problem with our car it was quite marked as it had been in a minor collision we were told and it was one of the last available and was also a substitution to our chosen car.
Now this car was over 2.5 year's old but drove brilliantly and internally was as good as new this was all fine until we picked up a puncture in the middle of literally nowhere we looked in the boot there were no tools and or spare wheel though some cars don't have a spare wheel these days, the real problem was the can of tyre fix had been precariously used so we had to call for assistance with little phone signal when we could of temporally fixed it our selves, so with help from a passing family our call to the help line resulted in a car transporter and a taxi back to the hire point in porto to pick up a replacement car this made for a very annoying and long day. The thing that is annoying me at the moment is all four tyres were the same brand with similar ware so are likely the originals and when I looked after the problem were very near there ware limit so when they have had a full life and why am I being charged for a new tyre when there almost at the end of there life. Seams a bit rich to me. The replacement car was almost new less than 10k on clock the one thing I have learnt from this is 108s are a horrible little soulless euro box with nothing to like about them and will avoid any purchase were as the fiat 500 well that just might be my next car I didn't expect much and was on to a bad start as far as handover experience but what a fun gutsy car to drive that could keep up with traffic unlike the 108. Also be aware you will be expected to leave another deposit on the replacement car so will likely max out your card on just this alone were it could have been just transferred to the new hire as they knew the first car was not damaged beyond the tyre.
