Catalonia is so much more than just Barcelona, and the northern city of Girona is one of the most interesting destinations in the Catalonian region. Inhabited for millennia and thus notable for its architecture and culture, Girona also offers access to the stunning Costa Brava region. These are three of the most interesting attractions in and around it:

• The Jewish Quarter. Prior to their expulsion in the late 15th century, Girona was home to a large and thriving Jewish community and was sometimes even called the Jerusalem of Catalonia. Today, this heritage survives in the narrow streets and walls of the old Jewish Quarter and via cultural institutions like the Catalan Jewish Museum.
• Banys Arabs. Although no longer fulfilling their original function — they have now been turned into a museum — the Arab baths of Girona are one of the most interesting attractions in the city. Built in the 12th century in a Romanesque fashion, their columns and ornamentation were influenced by the Roman baths that can be found across the region and are at least 1,000 years older.
• Girona Cathedral. Preparing to celebrate the 1000th anniversary of its consecration in 1038, the Cathedral of Saint Mary of Girona is one of the most notable religious buildings in all of Catalonia. A mixture of various architectural styles, it is known for its two bell towers and also boasts the widest Gothic nave in the world. Thanks to its impressive vault and stained glass windows, the church is as impressive from the inside as it is from the outside.
• The Pyrenees. Although famous for its seacoast, Girona is also located near the southern slopes of the Pyrenees and offers easy access to the majestic mountain range. Nearby attractions include the town of Besalú with its impressive bridge and well-preserved historic center, as well as the extinct volcano of Santa Margarida. With a rental car, you can travel even higher in the mountains to the north and west.

Location

Girona Airport is about 14 km (8.7 mi) southwest of Girona and about 92 km (57 mi) north of Barcelona. Motorways A2 and N-IIa, and Carrer Barcelona are the main roads connecting the airport to Girona.

Services and facilities

Although the airport is rather small, you’ll find several bars, coffee shops, fast food restaurants, and vending machines, as well as a convenience store and the Costa Brava Duty Free area. There are also ATMs, a luggage wrapping service, a lost luggage office, and a children’s play area. The airport is well equipped for travelers with reduced mobility, and special assistance is offered, but be sure to contact your airline at least 48 hours before your arrival if you’d like this service.

Nearest gas station

Benzinera Galp Gironès Sud, located at AP-7, 17457 Riudellots de la Selva, Girona, Spain , can be reached in about 15 minutes and is open daily, 24 hours. There are many other gas stations near the airport and on the way to the city.
