Airport travel guide

Located in the very northwest of the state of Jalisco, the resort city of Puerto Vallarta is one of Mexico’s most famous beach destinations. Naturally, the number one attraction here is the sun and ocean, but you can explore the surrounding fishing villages, learn more about Mexican culture or even go whale watching in winter. These are three of the most interesting attractions in and around Vallarta:
- Playa Los Muertos. Despite its very ominous name, the Beach of the Dead is, in fact, one of the nicest and most popular beaches in Puerto Vallarta. Named after the bodies of sailors from the shipwrecks that used to wash up in the area in the old days, it is now known for its pier, central location, many beach bars, restaurants, and hip atmosphere. Water taxis to the nearby beach town of Yelapa, a significantly more quiet and relaxed destination, take off from here.
- Aquaventuras Park. One of the most popular family attractions in the area, Parque Aquaventuras is dedicated to the conservation of Pacific marine animals such as sea lions and different species of dolphins. In addition to the wildlife, there are also attractions like waterslides and possibilities to try different extreme sports. Parque Aquaventuras is located outside of the city center, but the drive north takes only about 20 minutes.
- Nayarit State. Located just a stone’s throw north of Puerto Vallarta, the neighboring state of Nayarit is the perfect place for anyone craving an off-the-beaten-track experience. The region has a number of resort towns in its southern parts near Puerto Vallarta, like Punta Mita, but also lots of wild beaches in the north — like Sayulita and San Pancho — mangroves, dry forests, and plenty of wildlife. Meanwhile, the state’s capital, Tepic, boasts a mixture of well-preserved colonial architecture and interesting museums.
