The south east of Sicily is a must for those wanting to see the history of the island, rather than a beach holiday. Greeks, Arabic, Romans, Normans; it is all here. Along with fab food.

Had a great time traveling round. Driving but scary at first but once we realized the way they drive no problems. Palermo bit dodgy but overall one of the best trips we have taken and we are worldwide travellers. Would definitely recommend Sicily as the place to go to

It was fine, though driving through Palermo to get to the airport on the way back was a scary experience, as there do not seem to be any road rules that apply in Palermo.

We really enjoyed Siracusa and driving around the Sicilian coast. Taormina was a lovely place.

Sicily is great place to rent a car. Definitely recommend! Good roads, not expensive toll roads, speed limit 130 km/hour. My advice to take a small car (we get Fiat 500), it will be easy to park it.

When you rent Fiat 500, be always sure to lock and check the car (trunk of the car can by un/locked separately). Enjoy Catania, its a safe and beautiful city, I lived it. Pro tip: try spada and tuna carpaccio (and/or tartar) at Il Gambero Pazzo and at Vuciata - kitchen market 🇮🇲🇮🇹❤️

Very beautiful place sicily, but little expensive... and always be carfeul and on the watch when driving in towns or cities there, some seem not to adhere to traffic roles.

Sicily was a very interesting destination, the tiny hilltop towns were very interesting and each seemed to have friendly people willing to give private tours, including garages filled with carvings or selfies with tourists and stories about famous people like the mafia and musilini’s daughter (I think), like Nino who gave us some of his fortified wine and his address, pre-printed on a tiny piece of paper so we could send him the selfie! We stayed 3 days more than expected and didn’t see everything we wanted.

Driving in Catania for someone used to the UK can be very stressful. There is no concept of right of way or staying in your allocated lane. The roads are very busy and narrow in the centre. Parking on the street is free but high likelihood of damage. Parking at hotels averages 8euro per day so factor that into your costs.

Contrary to folklore, the general standard of driving was excellent. Satnav is essential for getting around small towns, but the in-car system provided was sufficient. We didn't go to Palermo, but in general motorways are still free, main roads are clear, minor roads can be potholed, town streets can be very narrow, but traffic generally is light.

By renting a car you can easily visit many resorts in Sicily. However, local drivers are insane. There appears to be no rules. Vehicles come at you from every direction. Cars rarely slow down or stop for pedestrians. Many roads have drops, no barriers, no road markings or signs.

Mmmnn, give Sicily cities a skip and rather visit the little villages. Cities are extremely dirty and smelly whereas the villages are quaint, clean and so much to experience. Take full insurance - drivers are way crazy and reckless in Sicily.

We stayed in a very pleasant and very friendly farmhouse called Villa Casina dell'Etna. We went around to Mt. Etna, Etnaland, Gore di Alcantara, Ortigia etc. In the evening we spent most of the time in Nicolosi where the nightlife is quite good with very good restaurants and bars.

UK drivers need to remember a culture shift when first driving in Sicily - as far as the locals are concerned there are very few rules of the road to follow, so keep your wits about you! Double check whether its unleaded or diesel when picking up car. Our car was diesel, but confusingly had a sticker indicating it took unleaded. We got it right, fortunately.
