We visited the Mount Etna, spoke in Giardini Naxos, celebrated in Mamma Camastra with the Mamma del Borgo.

We stayed a little out in the sticks in Brucoli which meant that having a car was critical to being able to see the island. Ortigia was a highlight as well as climbing Etna. There is so much to see and do in Sicily- we need to come back!!

We were visiting my partner’s family near Marina Di Ragusa. Lovely area and luckily beautiful blue skies everyday. So we enjoyed relaxing on the beach in the afternoons.

We covered 800km staying at Palermo, Agrigento, Piazza Armenia, Punto Secco and Ortigia. Roads were fine but driving in the cities was tricky. Definitely needed use of iPhone directions esp going through the market on Saturday at Ortigia. Can strongly recommend all the 5 places where we stayed. Hotel opposite Duomo at P Armenia was fab but involved going uphill through some very narrow streets. Food at all restaurants was very good and not expensive while and weather in late Sept-mid October was excellent. High 20s with clear blue skies every day.

Driving was fine on the main roads but very tight in the towns. Tolls are easy, but carry coins and dont forget t get ticket on first toll.

Sicily is much better experienced by car - we could explore so much of the island thanks to our little Fiat Panda! Driving in the towns, especially Catania, is quite an experience - but just go slowly and embrace you tourist-y-ness and you'll be fine :D

Astonishing amount of sites to see in Eastern Sicily from fascinating museums to amazing historical buildings and from beautiful seascapes to rugged mountains, let alone the food and drink. Highly recommend bathing in the Alcantra gorge; visiting Etna up the cable car (but you cannot get to the top anymore); Siracusa and Ortygia; Noto and Modico; Piazza Armentina, Morgantina and the Roman villa; Capo Milazzo and the Messina duomo; historic Catania including the museum; fabulous Taormina and Castelmola .
Bear in mind that driving in Sicily is like a real life Super Mario kart race and you need nerves of steel and 100% concentration to pre guess what side of the road other drivers will be on; who has right of way at roundabouts; not going into the fast lane of the autostrada unless you are prepared to speed at 100mph with a BMW inches behind you, flashing lights; driving up and down sinuous roads with a 1 in 3 gradient in first or second gear while avoiding oncoming coaches; ridiculously parked cars; potholes; etc; etc.

Sicily is an incredibly beautiful island - especially in spring when the wild flowers are amazing. The history of the island is an inspiring and totally captivating story, the people are generous and kind and having a car to fully explore the island is essential. We will be back.

There was so much to see in this area if Sicily it was great to have a car to get around, especially to places such as Etna and Ragusa. Local drivers were intense which is what I expected.
