If you're planning to explore the Tuscan countryside, it's definitely worth renting a car, so that you're in control of your time and destinations. I highly recommend paying extra for the GPS, mostly for navigating to and from Florence airport and getting into the countryside. This was my first time driving in a foreign country and it was much less stressful than I anticipated.

Florence is lovely but the surroundings offer marvellous location to the direction of Chianti, where you can find numerous small towns and villages that are different in atmosphere from each other as well as the lovely mountain routes there that offer spectacular views! Poppi around 50-60 km east of Florence is worth a visit and the rout there as well is just amazing! Remember to eat before 2:30 pm or otherwise you might starve...!
