Airport travel guide
Located near the meeting point of Switzerland, France, and Germany, the EuroAirport serves all three countries at once. On the French side, you’ll find the city of Mulhouse, an off-the-beaten-path destination that’s trying to reinvent itself as a cultural hub. These are seven of the most interesting attractions in and around it:
-
Mulhouse museums. Mulhouse is famous for its rich collection of museums worth visiting. Among the most notable is the Musée de l'Automobile, which exhibits an impressive collection of old and modern cars and motorbikes and cycles. The Musée de l'Impression sur Étoffes is also very interesting, highlighting Mulhouse's history and evolution of textile printing. The Musée des Beaux-Arts offers a fine selection of European works of art from the Middle Ages to the contemporary period. The EDF Electropolis Museum, dedicated to the history of electricity, is a unique museum offering interactive and exciting exhibitions for the whole family. The Musée du Papier Peint in Rixheim houses exceptional collections of wallpapers and decorative art objects. The Zoological and Botanical Park in Mulhouse is a must-see, with more than 1,200 animals and 3,500 plant species. Finally, to the north of Mulhouse, the Écomusée d'Alsace offers an immersion into traditional rural life in Alsace, with authentic reconstructed houses and buildings, gardens and animals.
-
Mulhouse Old Town. Many heritage buildings of Mulhouse were, sadly, damaged during the Second World War, but since then, the city has done a good job of rebuilding them and even add some new touches. The heart of historic Mulhouse is the Place de la Réunion, lined with beautiful buildings, including the impressive Renaissance Town Hall and the neo-Gothic Temple Saint-Étienne, the highest Protestant church in France.
-
Colmar. Colmar is a charming Alsatian town located 60 km (37 mi) from the Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg Euro airport, attracting many visitors yearly. The old town's cobbled streets are lined with colorful half-timbered houses and picturesque canals, providing a dramatic and romantic setting. History and culture lovers will be delighted by the city's many museums, such as the Unterlinden Museum, which houses works of art from the Middle Ages to the 20th century, or the Bartholdi Museum, which pays tribute to the famous sculptor who created the Statue of Liberty. The city's many Christmas markets are also top-rated, offering a festive and warm atmosphere during the festive season.
-
Strasbourg. The capital of Alsace and of the Grand-Est region is situated 130 km (80 mi) from the Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg Euro airport. Located on the banks of the Ill River, the city is famous for its architectural heritage, rich history and Alsatian gastronomy. Two districts of Strasbourg are listed as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO: the Grande-Ile (historical center) and the Neustadt (district built during the German period from 1871 to 1918). The Notre Dame de Strasbourg cathedral is one of the city's most emblematic monuments, recognizable by its 142-meter high Gothic spire. The Petite France district is also a famous picturesque. The half-timbered houses, cobbled streets and water canals give the area a romantic atmosphere. Visitors can also take a boat ride to see the city from the water. History buffs can visit the Palais Rohan, which houses the Musée des Beaux-Arts, the Musée Archéologique and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs. Finally, gourmets will not be outdone in Strasbourg, with many culinary specialties to sample, such as sauerkraut, tarts, pretzels and the famous foie gras. Finally, the city's Christmas markets are top-rated, offering culinary specialties and local crafts.
-
Alsace Wine Route. The Alsace Wine Route is a 170 km (105 mi) long route between Thann and Marlenheim that offers an insight into the wine region and its traditions. Among the wine route's most popular towns and villages are Andlau, Eguisheim, Kaysersberg, Ribeauvillé, Riquewihr and Obernai. The Alsatian villages along the wine route also offer charming architecture and an authentic atmosphere. Colorful half-timbered houses, cobbled streets and village squares lined with cafés and restaurants create a romantic and welcoming atmosphere.
