Although not as often visited as Vienna, Innsbruck, or Salzburg, Austria’s second-largest city has plenty to enjoy if you give it a chance. These are four of its most notable attractions:

• Eggenberg Palace. A palatial complex and fine example of Baroque architecture, Eggenberg is justifiably featured in most tourist information covering Graz. Built in 1460 and then significantly expanded in the 17th century (that’s where most of its Baroque touch comes from), it includes not just a number of stunning buildings, but equally beautiful gardens that surround it. As part of the Graz Old Town, Eggenberg has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2010.
• Kunsthaus Graz. Located in a stunning, hypermodern building that is illuminated at night, Graz’s main contemporary art museum is quite the sight to behold. What’s inside is not too shabby, either, as there’s an impressive collection of works by notable artists from Austria and abroad. The museum was constructed as a part of Graz’s preparations to become the European Capital of Culture in 2003.
• Murinsel. Another modernist project that was also built for Graz as the European Capital of Culture, the Mur is an artificial, floating island in the middle of the river of the same name. Shaped like a huge seashell, it is connected to the mainland by two footbridges and is just a very short walk north of the aforementioned Kunsthaus.
• Carinthia. The southwestern neighbor of Graz and Styria, the region of Carinthia is one of the most interesting parts in the country. Situated alongside the border with Slovenia, another very worthy travel destination, Carinthia is known for its stunning scenery of mountains and highland lakes, winter sports bases, and its charming capital, Klagenfurt, which is less than a two hour drive from Graz.

Location

Graz Airport is about 9 km (5.6 mi) south of Graz city center. Motorway B67, Lauzilgasse, Herrgottwiesgasse, and Großmarktstraße are the main roads connecting the airport to the city.

From the Graz airport, it’s easy to explore the Steiermark region from north to south, enjoying Styrian food and wine, and even pop over into northern Slovenia.

You’ll find cafeterias and snack bars, as well as a convenience store, and a duty-free outlet available to passengers leaving the EU. There are also ATMs, a currency exchange, a lost and found office at the airport information desk, baby changing facilities, a children’s play area, an observation deck, and the airport’s art gallery. Graz Airport is fully equipped for travelers with reduced mobility. Special assistance is also available, but make sure to contact your airline in advance if you’d like this service.

Nearest gas station

AS Tankstelle at Anton Hermann Strasse 3 can be reached in about two minutes and is open 24/7. There are many other gas stations near Graz Airport and in the city.
