The third-largest city in Tasmania, Devonport is a small and cozy city with a number of landmarks, and it also provides access to much of the northwestern part of the islands. These are three of the most notable attractions in and around it:

• Tiagarra Aboriginal Cultural Center. A cultural center and a nature trail rolled into one, Tiagarra provides a fascinating insight into the history, folklore, and lives of indigenous Tasmanians. The trail takes you to explore some rock formations which, despite sometimes being mistaken for carvings, are of natural origin.
• Bass Strait Maritime Center. The history of Tasmania, and especially its colonization by the British, is inextricably linked to the sea, and one of the best places to learn about these relatively more recent pages of Devonport's history is the Maritime Center. Named after the strait that divides Tasmania from Melbourne and the rest of the Australian mainland, the center has a fascinating collection of ships, boats, and other historical and naval artifacts.
• The Tasmanian Arboretum. Tasmania has plenty of protected nature refuges, some of them near the city, but it is also possible to enjoy some greenery without leaving the Devonport area. One such place is the splendid arboretum which is rich in flora, as well as fauna as it provides home to many species of aquatic birds and platypuses. Located on Old Tramway Road, the Arboretum is about a 15-minute drive southwest of the city center.

Location

Devonport Airport is about 11 km (6.8 mi) east of Devonport and about 100 km (62 mi) northwest of Launceston. Pardoe Road, Port Sorell Road, Bass Highway, and William Street are the main roads connecting the airport to the city.
