Driving licence requirements

  • Portugal recognizes valid foreign driving licences that are written in a Latin alphabet and if you’re visiting for a shorter period than six months.
  • If you’re in Portugal for longer than six months or are living there permanently, the law requires you to obtain a Portuguese driver’s license
  • If your driver’s license is printed in a non-Latin alphabet (Cyrillic, Arabic, etc.), you’ll need an International Driving Permit (IDP).
  • Similarly, if your driving licence doesn’t show your photograph, you might be required to have an IDP instead.
  • Even if you have an IDP, you must also carry your original driving licence as you might be required to present both.
  • You must carry your driving licence, not a copy, with you at all times. 
  • You need to have had your driver’s license for at least two years.
  • Some rental car suppliers charge a young driver fee for drivers between the ages of 22 and 25 and a senior driver fee for drivers over the age of 65.
  • There may be additional requirements depending on the car supplier and category, so make sure to check the rental conditions before booking.

Portugal has a land border with only one other country, Spain. Like Portugal, Spain is a member of the European Union (EU) and the Schengen Area, meaning that the entry requirements for Spain are the same as for Portugal.

We did lots of touring with planned stops but also took additional stops. The roads are different to come parts of the UK, some very steep and twisty but its a volcanic island so you have to expect that. But lets say it not for the faint hearted if you want to tour the island yourself!

The hike from PICO DO ARIEIRO TO PICO RUIVO was amazing, the hire car was a great way to go as there's plenty of parking at Pico do Aero despite what you may read. We only made it half way and turned back as it was quite challenging, the best thing that's not on any sites I've read, is that the amazing photo's you see area all near the start within 20 mins of the car park and very achievable for anyone. Some of the views are both amazing and terrifying, very little in the way of safety so be very careful with any children. I think definitely get a hire car, we managed to see so much thanks to this. I chose 7m via this co as it was by far the cheapest which was a worry but turned out fine.

We spent a week in Alvor, firstly at the Pestana Alvor Park hotel (excellent), then at our Alto Club timeshare (definitely Gold Crown!), enjoying time by the pools and a day by the sea. Great restaurants, from Cinqua Quinas by the beach for great steaks and super staff, the Market Place for chicken piri piri, La Piazza for lovely Italian food and Phoenix for a great choice of British food!

we travelled to the top end of Portugal Valenca and stayed for the week in a Villa sightseeing around the river area and also visiting inland Ponte de Lima and BOB Jesus Gardens, 2nd week we did a 2hr drive down through Braga and on to Boticas where we had the most relaxing week for a long time, the Peugeot 2008 that Sixt gave us was perfect and even at 1.2 petrol it handled the gradients with ease as it did the motorways.

Sarges the must southerly point with it's fort is worth a visit and the museum inside the fort has interesting facts and artifacts. Silves is a must with it's dominant castle overlooking the town. Cobbled streets cluttered with restaurants and bars. The Medieval festival takes over the town mid August and is amazing. The whole town becomes awash with floating banners and every corner has delicious food stalls along with entertainer's singing and dancing.

Rented an Airbnb - With the car it made the whole trip so much easier and cheaper as we didn't have to rely on public transport. We stayed in Riberia Bravo, so we drove to Funchal multiple times, Fanal Forrest, Pico Do Arieiro & Pico Ruvio, Cascata do Risco was a lovely hike and beautiful waterfall. We went to some fantastic restaurants (with vegan options for my partner) called Mundo Vegan and Art Food Corner Cafe

We had a great trip, with some fantastic walks, too many incredible views to mention and many very enjoyable meals. Once you get out of the expensive hotels, Madeira prices are very reasonable. One of our party was elderly, which limited our activities, but if you like outdoor activities, big hills, big views and great food then Madeira is strongly recommended, particularly for a winter break.

Motorways up to the mountains of ghe Douro valley are fantastic, and scenery spectacular. Watch out for the tolls as you have to filter across to the correct lane - and I recommend you get the automatic tag so you can drive straight through.

Local to Albufiera and Villamoura. Took the toll road in error once. 25cent charge.. Car was very comfortable fiat tipo estate. Air con loads of luggage space. Take some time to reset the satnav to English if you're not a fluent portugese speaker/reader. We took a detour to Faro after we picked the car up. Right road wrong direction!

Have been to Portugal 10+ times now and have travelled the full length of the Algarve several times. If confident then travel to Monte Clerico via Monchique ,its a lovely drive and nice big beach at the end. Shop in the different supermarkets for prices and visit Silves for the castle and cafes, you can also catch the boat to here. Stick to the N125 if not worried for time

We love Portugal and visit for holidays 2 to 3 times a year. It’s a good idea to spend €20 on the pre-paid toll card and use the motorways if you can. The non motorway routes have so many roundabouts, it’s not pleasant driving.

Didn't had a problem with the service this time. Already booked cars with TURISPRIME 3 times before. To be honest, this was the ony time that I had doubt about the car. Going from Porto to Viseu, I almost felt I needed a push to go up the hills. Never had this problem before and always booked the same type of car. I will book again, as it seems one of the cheepes and reliable car rentals, but I would like to have a Toyota again.

Go for a manual car as the automatics are too expensive. Manual good for the bendy roads. Visit Funchal, do levada walks, climb pico ruivo, visit câmara de lobos and stay along the south coast for the best weather.

The 125 route has improved greatly ovet the years and offers good access to the coastal towns , the A22 offering faster access to tiwns fuethet further apart, at a price. The west coast is magnificenf and well worth the trip, in particular Odiciexe both the town and beaches.

I drove across Algarve- from Faro to Sagres. Carvoeiro was by far my number one spot- picturesque town with great amenities and walking trials. In fact I've extended my stay just so I could stay there a few days longer. Albufeira and Portimao were a bit too touristy and busy for my taste. Although little town just across Portimao- Ferragudo was a pleasant little gem. Lagos and especially Ponta de Pidade is a must- absolutely mesmerising.
