The capital of Turkey is home to the country’s government institutions, but also has a cozier side embodied by its hilly neighborhoods, cafes, and hospitable denizens. Having a millennia-old history to explore doesn’t hurt, either. Here are three suggestions for your trip:

• Museum of Anatolian Civilizations. Covering the human inhabitation of Ankara and the rest of present-day Turkish territory that spans more than 10,000 years, this museum does a monumental job. Many of the Hellenic, Assyrian, Phrygian, and other artifacts that are on display here are truly fascinating. The museum is in the historical center of the city near a number of other famous landmarks.
• Ankara Castle. One of the aforementioned neighboring points of attraction, a visit to the Ankara Castle should be a part of any tourist trip to the Turkish capital. First built more than 2,800 years ago and significantly reconstructed by a number of civilizations that ruled the area between then and now, its dramatic hilltop location and the views that it provides of the rest of the city ensure its relevance to this day.
• Boğazkale. Also known by its old name, Hattusa, this village is home to one of the few surviving sites of the ancient Hittite civilization. Dating back about three to four thousand years ago, Hattusa’s main surviving landmark is the impressive Sphinx Gate. The drive from Ankara takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes but provides you access to a scenic, sparsely populated, and unexplored part of the country.

Terminals

The two Ankara Airport terminals, Domestic and International, are in the same building, and you can easily walk between them in about ten minutes.

Location

Ankara Airport is about 28 km (17 mi) north of the city center. Özal Bulvarı/D180, Erbakan Bulvari, and Şht. Ömer Halisdemir are the main roads connecting the airport to the city.

Nearest gas station

Şan Petrol, located at Saracalar Mahallesi, Özal Bulvarı, 06750, can be reached in about eight minutes and is open 24/7. There are many other gas stations next to Ankara Airport and on the way to the city.
