We had another great Costa Rican adventure from Nicaragua to Panama with family. Always so much to see and do, one month wasn't enough. With all the birds animals and beaches to explore we could have used another month.

We spent our trip in the la fortuna area. It was spectacular. The jungle and wildlife are amazing. We also ate incredible meals at don rufino, fortuneno, and mun cheese.

Roads in Costa Rica are very rough, curvy, and not great. So I think you are better off taking tours with locals than trying to drive yourself around

We had never been to Costa Rica before, nor had we ever driven in a foreign country, so we were sort of nervous about the whole experience. Needless to say, we were greeted by very knowledgeable and friendly staff members and the rental experience was a great one. We will definitely use discovercars.com again the next time we travel.

Having 4WD is a must if you are traveling around the country. We visited the beaches near Samara, did a catamaran tour with Kaya tours which was awesome! There are so many fun activities to do. La Perla Soda was delicious and affordable and we ate at El Coyote twice- amazing service and food. Then we traveled inland to La Fortuna where we went to Mistico hanging bridges-it rained the whole time but it is a rainforest so no complaints. We also had a wonderful tour at Bogarin Trails where we saw sloths! (And much more) and learned about the local history and 1968 Arenal Volcano eruption. Finally we did a canopy zip lining tour with Ecoglide which was amazing-the guides were so efficient and funny and the views were spectacular.

La Fortuna was amazing, Sevultura Adventure Park in the cloud forest was outstanding, the Rio Celeste waterfall is definitely worth the hike. Surfing in Jacó with Andres Rojas was great, and Manuel Antonio with a guide is worth every penny. Moyas Place in Nuevo Arenal and El Avión in Manuel Antonio are must try restaurants.

We went to the Westin Riveria Resort. It was wonderful. We visited Rio Celeste Rainforest. It was worth the drive. It was stunning. We saw monkeys and lots of wildlife. The people in Costa Rica are so nice. We loved our visit

This was our families favorite vacation ever. We went to la fortuna and tamarindo. Did a lot of excursions, hikes, eating at local restaurants, and met many locals we will keep in touch with.

Costa Rica is a beautiful country from the seashore to the mountains. Recommend you have GPS available due to lack of road signage and avoid driving at night in the country due to lack of road lighting and narrow roads.

The majority of the roads in Costa Rica were well maintained. Some of the speed limits seemed a little inconsistent on major highways (going from 60 km/h to 40 and then back to 80) but otherwise the conditions were good. If you take Toll roads, it’s ideal to have Colones even though they will accept USD. The only place I found challenging to drive in was Monteverde because many roads were not paved, were very hilly and had plenty of rocks and potholes! Otherwise, the experience was a good one!

We would highly suggest renting a 4-wheel drive if you're going to be exploring the country. I don't think we put the vehicle in 4-wheel drive once, but the extra clearance/height of the vehicle helped us to get thru/over deep pot holes and extremely rough, rocky roads (which you'll find throughout CR). But, if you're there during wet season you'd probably need 4-wheel drive for sure.
