Airport travel guide

The capital of the northwestern region of Galicia and the destination of arguably the most famous pilgrimage in Europe, Santiago de Compostela has plenty to get excited about. The city itself is not big but has fascinating history and art to explore and also offers access to the verdant nature of Galicia. With that in mind, these are four of the most interesting attractions in and around it:
- Santiago de Compostela Cathedral. Taking 140 years to construct and completed in the early 13th century, Santiago’s Cathedral is one of the most impressive churches in this part of Spain. A mixture of Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque styles, it is the assumed resting place of the apostle St. James and therefore the endpoint of the St. James pilgrimage. You might also want to consider visiting the Cathedral Museum.
- Museum of the Galician People. Part of the Spanish nation, but at the same time historically, culturally, and even linguistically distinct, the Galicians themselves and their ways are the main point of research for this fascinating museum. In addition to exhibits on traditions and folk costumes, there are also displays of Galician art, as well as archaeological findings that date back millennia.
- Monastery of San Martiño Pinario. Another important religious landmark, San Martiño Pinario is the second-largest monastery in all of Spain, surpassed by only El Escorial near Madrid. Dating back to the Medieval times, but having been significantly rebuilt over centuries, the monastery complex encompasses various architectural styles.
- Atlantic Islands of Galicia National Park. Made up of four small archipelagos that have lots of marine, terrestrial, and avian life and practically no human presence, this is one of the most interesting protected areas in Galicia. There are ferries and boats from a number of coastal locations, including the city of Vigo which is about an hour’s drive southwest of Santiago. Most ferry companies don’t permit taking a car with you — and either way, it might be inconvenient if you’d like to take a boat to jump between the islands — but you can park at the port and pick your rental up after a return to the mainland. Keep in mind that the ferry service is much more active during the tourist season — the warmer months of the year.
