Stroll through the old shopping district of Baixa, take in some culture at Museu Colecção Berardo or one of the countless small art galleries, appreciate remnants of stunning and enigmatic Moorish architecture, eat like a Portuguese in Chiado area and enjoy truly authentic music at a local Fado club. Or try out one of the countless other things this unique place has to offer.
  • 25 de Abril Bridge: The best way to make your entrance into Lisbon is by driving over the majestic 25 de Abril Bridge. Considered by many the Europe’s answer to the iconic Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, this beautiful landmark offers views of Tejo river and the panoramic beauty of the Portugal’s capital. If you arrive early, it’s worth driving back here later for a spectacular sunset.
  • Belém. One of the charming parts of Portugal’s capital has history, monuments, and stunning architecture on every step of the way. Easy to reach by car or on foot, Belém attracts visitors with such landmarks as Torre de Belém of the Belém Tower, the Jerónimos Monastery, and Padrão dos Descobrimentos or the Monument to the Discoveries.
  • National Archaeological Museum. One of the largest and most interesting museums in the country, Lisbon’s Archaeology Museum has a wide variety of exhibits dedicated to the different ancient cultures that inhabited what is now Portugal, as well as classical civilizations from around the world.   • You can only enter the roundabout after giving way to cars already on it.
  • The car documentation and insurance always has to be inside a vehicle.
  • Drivers can only use a mobile phone if it is a hands free or an earpiece.
  • The legal alcohol limit is 0.05% for experienced drivers and 0.2 for novice drivers.
  • Safety cameras are in use.
  • On-street parking is available in the center of Lisbon. In the red zone, parking costs €1.60/hr ($1.9/hr), with a maximum stay of 2 hours. In the yellow zone, parking costs €1.20/hr ($1.42/hr),  with a maximum stay of 4 hours. In the green zone, parking costs €0.80/hr ($0.95/hr), with a maximum stay of 4 hours. 
  • There are numerous car parks in the city center where parking costs €15-45 ($18-53) per day. A better option might be heading south of the city center where parks like Santa Apolónia, Docas and Docas Ponte charge around €5-6 ($6-7) per day.   • When parking in a street, your car must be parked facing the direction of travel.

Ideas for day trips

  • Sintra: A trip to Portugal won’t be complete without visiting Sintra. Its spectacular castles of Castelo dos Mouros and Palácio de Pena are less than half an hour trip from Lisbon. There are always many visitors, so the drive around Sintra will be slow, but that only adds to the experience. Do note that most streets here are one-way only. Continue onwards to the spectacular Cabo de Roca, the westernmost point of the continent of Europe.
  • Serra de Arrabida: On of the most scenic drives in the whole country is just southeast of Lisbon, in Serra da Arrabida national park. The road, Estrada de Escarpa (N379-1), winds through steep limestone hills offering gorgeous vistas of ageless cliffs, stunning beaches and turquoise waters.
  • Nazaré: If you’re feeling truly adventurous, head north of Lisbon - in 90 minutes you will reach the beach town of Nazaré where the record for surfing the world’s highest wave was set. It is a beautiful and wild place where the Atlantic ocean comes in its full force. The charming Peniche is also on the way, offering more beginner-friendly surfing waves. On your way back, catch your breath in the town of Obidos - park outside its historical fortress, visit the bookshops and sample delicious jinja right on the street. Or visit one of the tiny beach villages where tasty bifanas, fish soups and bolinhos de bacalau are always on menu.
  • Cascais. One of the most popular day trips from Lisbon, Cascais is a lovely beach town on the mouth of the Tagus River. Its scenic location made it the favorite holiday home of Portuguese kings; nowadays, it attracts visitors with its beaches, parks, and churches, as well as the Boca de Inferno, or Hell’s Mouth, an impressive chasm in the coastal cliffs. Cascais is half an hour’s drive west of Lisbon and only 20 minutes south of Sintra, so both destinations can be visited on the same trip. The neighboring Cascais-Sintra Nature Park is also very much worth a visit.

Lisboa and Algarve- amazing food, awesome off the grid restaurants excellent seafood, great beaches, architecture, and art. The cost for most, even comparing dollars to euros was better than expected. The roads were fun to drive on, many were unpaved and winding through hills and wildernesses—so much to explore. The locals, residents, and vendors were very friendly and many spoke at least some English which was great for communication, dining, and directions. We cannot wait to go back!

Portugal is a horrendous country to drive in. Even with two GPS systems, we had extreme difficulty navigating Porto and Lisbon. There is no way to drive between two points without dozens of turns, many down small alleyways or through what appeared to be parking lots.

We needed a car because we wanted to have the freedom to go wherever we wanted. The roads are great and driving in Portugal was a piece of cake. I recommend you pay the extra fee for the automatic toll counter that keeps track of how much you owe, without having to stop at the toll gate every time.

During my recent trip to Lisbon and Porto, I had the opportunity to explore the cities' many historical attractions, including various churches and landmarks. However, the highlight of my trip was enjoying a fresh seafood dinner at Point Final while watching the sunset. The food was absolutely delicious and the view was breathtaking. Overall, it was a fantastic experience and I highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area. (TIP: If you don't have a reservation for Point Final, arrive an hour and 15 minutes early, otherwise, you will wait in a long line).

We were so glad to rent a car in Lisbon Portugal. Everyone made a big deal about the way they drive, but honestly no different than in the states. You just have to drive for your safety and safety of others. By renting a car, we were able to go where we wanted and when we wanted and not having to depend on family or public transportation. We went down to Lagos Algarve to check out the cliffs and beaches which were beautiful. We went to the palaces in Sintra Lisbon. Overall a great trip.

I had a fantastic 12 days exploring beautiful Portugal. I drove to the Algarve where I walked around cliff top forts, zoomed around sea caves in a zodiac and ate spectacular seafood. Then to Evora with it’s mysterious megaliths and an unforgettable lunch in a local tavern where I was treated like family. Then to Porto where I headed off on a wine tour in the Douro Valley to learn about port and explored Braga, Viana do Castelo and Aveiro. Then back to Cascais which is a beautiful seaside town. Finally Lisbon which is now one of my favourite places in the world…the food, the iconic sights and most of all the people who are so generous and helpful. All of this was topped off by many pastries, lovely wines and of course pasteis de nata’s!!

If you stay in Lisbon do not rent a car. If you want to see other parts of Portugal and more of the small towns then renting a car is best. Outside the cities the roads are wider, but inside cities and towns be prepared for very narrow streets.

We did approx 2200 km in 3 weeks in Portugal starting from Lisbonne, then Algarve, Coimbra, Porto, Douro, and finally with a grand finale in Sintra. All those places were incredible, we cannot go wrong anywhere in Portugal. Important tip: ask your rental company for a easypass device for the tolls, much much easier. We were very glad to have one. I had my daughter son-in-law and (just 2 year old) grand-daughter and it was an absolute marvel to see Portugal through her eyes. She loved Costa da Caparica, the beach, the restaurants [CostaIn made a simple but delicious bowl of spaghetti just for her; their risotto is amazing), the sunset. the street musicians, etc. She (we) was also awed walking on the glass floor of Casa dos Bicos and seeing the old roman wall below us. And she was delighted by the parks with their domesticated chickens, ducks, roosters; she loved playing with them. We loved the coolness and the flowers. The Oceanarium was a hit too; and so was the sculpture garden inside the citadel in Cascais.

Definatly get the toll pass transponder! Using toll roads were cheaper than other European countries, and saved hours on trips even in Lisbon and saved even more on trips outside of lisbon. The transponder saved stopping to pay and fumbling for 0.35 euro probably 25 times.

Driving around Portugal was good except for the narrow roads and traffic in Lisbon. There were too many toll roads as well but being able to pay with a credit card made it a little better. This was our 3rd long term car rental in Portugal. Our 3rd winter and we feel very comfortable and relaxed in Portugal and Spain. We especially enjoy the quiet hard to find towns or villages where we can enjoy and drink and a treat and just enjoy the atmosphere. I drove from Sintra to Algarve, it was really nice to have convertable without any extra charge in Algarve that was suggested by the rental company as an alternative to my non-convertable booking. I was there earlier and my car was not ready yet. I would have gotten my car too at the booked time. It was also great plus that it was ok to drive abroad without extra charges. Everything was great!

The roads in Portugal are well maintained. Get the toll device, it is worth having, you never have to stop and collect a ticket and pay tolls along the way. You just pay your tolls at the end of your trip when you check your rental car back in.

Don't visit cities with the car you can use metro or bus so it's easier to spent time in the capital. Use the car for shopping or when you want to go to beach or even to other places that are just possible to get to with car.

Took a small car to travel around Lisbon. Went to Arrabida, beaches in Cascais, west most point in Europe, and visited the castles in Sintra. Definitely places for every tourist to see. The car made that easy and is very affordable if you book in advance.

we took the car to drive to the algarve, which i would highly recommend we drove everything without using toll roads, so we kinda bought the toll package for nothing. just put in goolge maps in the settings 'no tollroads' and its easy to avoid them

It’s good prices to rent a car, but make your time good, because there’s a lot of traffic, could be a lot people for come the rent or drop the car, and some very old agent that not really good with the technology for rent car. Lisbon is amazing. They have great highways but really bad signage in the smaller locations. Google GPS was better than the vehicle built in GPS. Some crazy drivers but nothing different than what you would experience in various cities in Canada.
