Located in the far north of Norway, Harstad/Narvik is one of the most remote airports in Europe that has scheduled international airports. Primarily attracting visitors with its wild nature, the region of Nordland, where it is located, also has an interesting and well-preserved local culture. These are three of its most notable places to visit:
- Narvik. The home of the airport and the principal town in the area, Narvik is home to a permanent population of about 15,000, but punches above its weight when it comes to things to see and do. Known for its stunning location on the southern shore of Ofotfjord, it is a prime hiking and winter sports hub. Don’t miss out on taking the cable car that goes all the way up to the peak of Fagernes, a mountain overlooking the town and the waters below.
- Tysfjord. A place with an even more remote and wild feel than Narvik, Tys is not a town, but rather a municipality of scattered villages along the eastern shores of the fjord of the same name. In addition to magnificent nature, the area is the home of the indigenous Lule Sámi, and the municipality is the only place on the planet where their language has an official status (they call the area Divtasvuodna). A car trip from Narvik to Kjøpsvik, the main settlement of Tysfjord, takes about two and a half hours.
- Lofoten. An archipelago off the mainland and to the northwest of Narvik, Lofoten is considered by many Norwegians to be among the most beautiful places in their country. Historically known for its fishing and now a tourist center, the area is known for majestic peaks, long and narrow fjords, and white sandy beaches, but also the prehistoric paintings of the Kollhellaren cave and the Lofotr Viking Museum. Lofoten is connected to the mainland by the Sløverfjord undersea tunnel, and the islands of the archipelago are connected to each other by bridges. A car trip from Narvik to Sløverfjord takes just over two hours. Loften has a small international airport itself, the Leknes Airport, although as of 2025, it offers only domestic connections.
