Frequently Asked Questions (updated: Nov 5, 2026)
There are around ten different places on the main island of Mauritius where you can pick up a rental car — you can pick the most convenient one for you when searching for cars on our website. Most people tend to pick up a rental at the Mauritius Airport which is about a 1 hour and 10-minute drive from Flic-en-Flac.
The main island of Mauritius is quite small, so most places are within a 90-minute drive. Popular day trips from Flic-en-Flac, which is located on the island’s southwestern coast, include the beach town of Tamarin, Le Morne peninsula, and the capital, Port Louis.
The driving conditions in Flic-en-Flac, as well as in the rest of Mauritius, are generally pleasant – the roads are in good shape and the overall traffic culture is quite relaxed. Some rural areas are off-limits for cars while others are technically permitted, but might have very steep roads or lack pavement – it’s a good idea to do your research and plan out your route in advance.
While the main island of Mauritius is indeed quite small and you can drive around in less than two hours, you will need more time if you actually want to explore any of the places – this is especially true of all off-the-beaten-path spots and stunning nature areas that can be found in the island's interior.
Prices are lowest during June, starting at $26 for an Economy car and highest in December, when economy cars start at $38. Booking early for peak dates can save significantly. The most popular month in Flic en Flac is February, while the least popular month is May.
Flic en Flac hosts: Garuda Car Rental, Autounion, Morisoleil Car Rental, Am38, IDrive, Carental Mauritius, CATH CAR RENTAL, Hope Car Rental, Ace Ride Mauritius, Oasis Car Rental. Rental cars tend to sell out in the summer months, so booking early is recommended.

Over one weekend i explored the coast and mountain areas, visited the Central Markets and waterfront of the islands capital and got lost in the backstreets then found my way again.

Great to spend time out of the hotel seeing what the island had to offer. Having a car allows for that reasonably priced independence and not being tied by an expensive tour.
