Airport travel guide

Discovered by more and more travelers every year, the second city of Lithuania is a great destination — both for its landmarks and the surrounding region which’s waiting to be explored. These are six of the most interesting attractions in and around Kaunas:
- Old Town. The historic part of Kaunas is the city’s most popular sightseeing spot and also the location of many of its symbols. These include the 14th-century Kaunas Castle, City Hall, and Kaunas Arch-Cathedral Basilica, as well as interesting museums like the Medicine and Pharmacy Museum and Jewellery Museum.
- Church of St. Michael the Archangel. Located near the end of Laisves aleja, the main pedestrian street of Kaunas, this late 19-th century Orthodox-turned-Catholic house of prayer is a fine example of Byzantine revival architecture. The main reason tourists visit it, however, are the catacombs underneath it — started as the Museum of the Blind, they have remained in place and offer a claustrophobic, but fascinating experience.
- Birštonas. A small resort town about a 40-minute drive south, Birštonas is one of the most popular day trips from Kaunas. Located on the banks of the Nemunas River, the town is known for its mineral waters and spas, many of which are open to the public; beautiful parks; and a relaxed atmosphere.
- Ninth Fort Museum. Located just outside of the city center, this is one of the country’s most important museums and should definitely be on your Kaunas itinerary. It is one of the few remaining fortifications that surrounded the city in 1890. It is now a museum dedicated to the people who lost their lives here during both the Nazi and Soviet occupations in the 20th century.
- Pažaislis Monastery and Church. Located to the east of this city, if you are visiting Kaunas in the summer time, this is a fantastic place to go on a day trip. Located inside a beautiful park with swimming beaches and hiking trails, this monastery was built in 1664 and is home to Lithuania’s oldest clock tower.
- Kaunas Picture Gallery. One of the most interesting art spaces in the Baltics, the Picture Gallery features works by many notable Lithuanian creators, but also such internationally renowned avant-garde visionaries as George Brecht and Joseph Beuys, with special attention dedicated to the highly imaginative Fluxus movement that was prominent in the 1960s and 70s. In addition to the works displayed in various exhibitions, the museum is also recognizable for its rectangular building.
