Airport travel guide
The capital of Curacao, Willemstad might be small, but it has plenty for a visitor to enjoy. Its waterfront area is spectacular, and the influence of Dutch architecture, mixed with a noticeable Caribbean touch, is visible all over the city. The rest of the island is also just a short drive away. Here are its three most interesting attractions:
- Museum Kura Hulanda. One of the most interesting cultural institutions in Willemstad, this museum provides insight into the historical slave trade and the African peoples that were brought to Curacao as a result, as well as into the lives of the indigenous Arawak people who were the original inhabitants of the island. The museum is in the residential Otrobanda area, just across Sint Anna Bay from the more central Punda.
- Waterfront. Instantly recognizable for its many facades and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the city’s inner core and harbor has been called the most beautiful waterfront in the world. Do not expect to have the sights all for yourself as the Punda neighborhood, where it is located, attracts thousands of tourists every year – it is also the location of some of the best restaurants in the city – but no trip to Willemstad will be complete without a visit here.
- Christoffel National Park. Located on the northeastern coast of the island, Cristoffel is one of the several preserves where you can enjoy Curacao’s stunning nature. Made up of highlands that include Christoffel Peak, tropical forests, and wild beaches, the park can be explored by following one of its numerous hiking trails (though parts are off-limits to visitors as they include a turtle nesting area). The area is also home to some prehistoric indigenous drawings. The drive from Willemstad takes about 45 minutes.

We stayed right down town Punda in the middle of all the action. We were able to watch the bridge activity and feel like we were part of the city. In addition to this, we spent our days on a different beach, each one more amazing the day before.

It was my first trip to Curacao. Albeit, it wasn't a bad trip, but, quite frankly, I'm not looking forward to come back. My main attraction was scuba diving. And, regretfully, I didn't see much what I was looking for, most of the corals were dead or dying.

Westpunt is great. Just needs a supermarket. Best beaches are in that area. Willemstad is very nice, but beaches are not as nice on this side. I do recommend playa Marichi in Punda if you are staying close to the bridge. It’s small but calm and decent snorkeling under the walkway opposite the beach. Also Pirates Bay has a nice beach on the otrabanda side. If you want shops then go to Mambo, not Jan Thiel which is tiny. Mambo is the party beach, but I like more natural mellow places.

The island roads are poorly maintained and were littered with trash. Most of the beach’s were littered. Almost all of the beaches had minimal facilities (restrooms), and if they did, they were unkept. If you stay at an all inclusive, everything is pretty good. Otherwise, it’s as if a hurricane hit the island and no one has cleaned it up yet.

Best beach vacation ever! Loved Grote Knip, bars restaurants beach at Mambo Mood Cabana beach. Had fun walking streets in Willemstad and enjoyed the rif fort and the party scene. Kontiki beach resort was great and their location is the best in the island. Beautiful resort and walkable to do many restaurants and beaches.

We stay at Marazul Dive Resort also known as Dushi Apartment Curacao. The until we stayed in was 24A called Sandybottoms. The place is where you need to stay if you want to explore the Westpunt Bay Area of Curacao. The owner's Beth and Gregg sent us great information to get us on the right trek to make our vacation stay wonderful. We had excellent communication with them. The place was ready to go. They give good information on where to purchase some groceries. You know the basics milk, bread, eggs, and of course beer and ice before we got to the place. They explain that the last part of the drive will be remote, but don’t be alarmed or panic that you may be lost as you are getting close. Their information is the best we have gotten so far from places we have stayed at. So enjoy and go for an adventure like snorkeling, diving, hiking, swimming with the turtles and fish, going out to eat, or just relaxing and watching the great sunsets!
You have Dive’n Curacao dive shop and Cactus Cafe just outside the complex, an easy 5 minute walk. There are two other restaurants with a 5 to 10 minute walk as will as Playa Fort Beach and Playa Pishado Turtle Beach. At turtle beach we saw up to 6 different turtles and many ocean fish. Just down the road, about a 10 minute drive is Go West Diving where you can rent gear for shore or boat diving.
Another place that we went to Shete Boka Nation Park where you can drive or walk to see the
Boka Pistol to hear and see the shooting sound of the waves pounding into the inlet. Boka Table where you can see huge waves thunder into an underground cavern, Boka Kalki where sometimes you’ll see Sea Turtles lay their eggs. You may want to challenge yourself on a hard hike up Christoffel National Park, it’s not that tall, only 1220 ft. You will want to leave early in the morning. They will not let anyone go on the trails after 10AM because of the heat and humidity. This is a difficult hike to be prepared. Downtown Willemstad is like any another tourist city with its shops and restaurants, but the pedestrian bridge. When a ship has to exit the harbor an operator moves the bridge to one side, but if you are caught on one side they do have a free ferry to take you to the other side. A must see site.
