Airport travel guide

A busy and modern metropolis, the capital of Chile is one of the most sophisticated cities in South America. The city is characterized as much by its well-preserved historical center as it is by its active cultural life. Better yet, it also provides easy access to many of the landmarks of the central part of the country. With that in mind, these are four of the most interesting attractions in and around Santiago:
- Chilean Museum of Pre-Columbian Art. Divided into four sections, three of which are dedicated to the indigenous cultures of Chile and the Andes while the fourth shows the art of the peoples of Central and North America, it is one of the finest, most interesting museums in all of the country. Located in the city center, the museum’s exhibitions are in both Spanish and English.
- San Francisco Church. A church and convent that has withstood no less than 15 powerful earthquakes, the Iglesia de San Francisco will celebrate its 400th birthday in 2022. This makes it one of the oldest colonial buildings in the country. Located on La Alameda, Santiago’s main thoroughfare, the church can seem hidden among the many surrounding highrises but is well worth seeking out. The convent now houses the small, but fascinating Colonial Museum of Santiago.
- Bellavista. Located north of the city center, Bellavista is an artsy and fun part of the Chilean capital. The area is home to many galleries and historical landmarks, as well as Parque Metropolitano, one of the largest urban green zones in the world and a popular place of recreation for locals and tourists alike. The summit of the park has a viewing platform that on a clear day offers amazing views of the mountains and the city below.
- Valparaíso. Also known simply as Valpo, this coastal city is not just the seat of Chile’s national congress, it is also a popular tourist destination. The city is famous for its seemingly impossibly steep ascensores (funiculars), the Naval and Maritime Museum, colorful architecture, and a relaxed pace of life. The city is also surrounded by many beautiful beaches, especially in the Viña del Mar area immediately to the north and San Antonio to the south. The trip between Santiago and Valparaíso takes about 90 minutes.
