Located about a 12-hour drive – or a fairly short flight — from Chile’s capital, Santiago, Puerto Montt is the gateway to the South American country’s stunningly beautiful south. Characterized by the surrounding national parks, beaches, and even fjords, the area around Puerto Montt is a nature lover’s paradise. These are four of its most interesting attractions:

• Alerce Andino National Park. Located about an hour’s drive southeast of the city itself, the stunning nature of Alerce Andino is one of the main reasons why people visit Puerto Montt. Characterized by its steep and forested mountain slopes, as well as a concentration of about 50 lakes, the park is the perfect place to appreciate the landscapes typical of northern Patagonia. Unfortunately, the park can only be visited during its opening hours – save for holidays and other exceptions, it is open daily from 09:00 to 15:00. 
• Cochamó Valley. An alternative to the aforementioned Alerce Andino, this valley is another place to enjoy Southern Chile’s beautiful nature. Named after a lakeside village that is about a two hour drive from Puerto Montt, it is known for its wilderness accommodation options, rock climbing, hiking, and horseback riding. Getting off the main roads will require a 4x4 vehicle.
• Volcán Osorno Mountain and Skiing Center. Known for its relative proximity to Antarctica and the moderate climate that comes with it, the Puerto Montt area is known as the Chilean hub of winter sports. There are several skiing and snowboarding resorts in the Andean mountains that surround the city, with the Volcán Osorno Center being a 90-minute drive to the northeast. During the summer months, this is a prime area for hiking and mountain climbing.
• Valdivia. Known for its orderly charm and strong German heritage, Valdivia is one of the most interesting cities in this part of the country. Located on the Pacific coast, about a 2 hour and 30 minute drive north of Valdivia, is it definitely worth a visit if you have time on your hands (the drive itself is very scenic). In addition to having lots of cultural institutions and landmarks, Valdivia also offers easy access to an absolute wealth of beautiful beaches and forests.

The single passenger terminal has five gates. It serves all domestic and international air traffic.

Location

Puerto Montt Airport is about 16 km (10 mi) from Puerto Montt, the capital city of Los Lagos Region. V60, Ruta 226, Cardinal, and Pdte. Ibáñez are the main roads connecting the airport to the city.

Services and facilities

Although the airport is quite small, you’ll find a coffee shop, a restaurant, and a couple of other eateries, as well as a souvenir shop, a convenience store, a shop selling local crafts, and a shop selling Chilean seafood delicacies. There are also ATMs, a currency exchange, a lounge, and a massage salon. There are only basic facilities for travelers with reduced mobility; assistance at the airport is available, but make sure to contact your airline in advance if you’d like this service.

Nearest gas station

Petrobras gas station can be reached in about nine minutes. It will be on the left side of Ruta 226 when driving from Puerto Montt Airport to the city. There are other gas stations in and around Puerto Montt.
