Airport travel guide

Located in the central part of the country, near the border with Germany, Salzburg is, for many, one of the most picturesque attractions in all of Europe. Every year, thousands of visitors are equally charmed by its well-preserved architecture and stunning Alpine scenery. Salzburg is also the capital of the state of the same name where plenty more tourism treasures can be found. These are three of the most interesting attractions in and around it:
- Getreidegasse. Located in Salzburg’s Altstadt or Old Town, itself a UNESCO World Heritage area, the Grain Lane is as much an attraction in its own right as a street can possibly be. Narrow, but very flat and therefore walkable (it is a pedestrianized street), it is instantly recognizable for the presence of the many locally characteristic high townhouses. Many of Salzburg’s cultural landmarks and best cafeterias and restaurants can also be found here.
- Hohensalzburg Fortress. Of all the wonderful palaces to be found in the area, Hohensalzburg is arguably the one that’s hardest to miss – and not just because it is towering over the rest of the city from its majestic location on top of the Festungsberg mountain. The mighty fortification, first built in the 11th century, is a full quarter of a kilometer long and as recognizable for its interior as for its exterior, the Golden Hall embodying the Gothic glamour and wealth of its former rulers.
- Hohe Tauern National Park. One of the biggest national parks in this part of Europe – it is shared by the states of Salzburg, Carinthia, and Tirol – the High Tauern is as impressive as they come, being home to winding trails, mighty waterfalls, and Grossglockner, the almost 3,800 meter (12,460 feet) tall highest point in Austria. Home to several glaciers and ski resorts, the park turns into a hiking mecca every summer. Coming from Salzburg, the park’s closest entry is Mittersil, one of the park’s information centers, that is about a two hour drive southwest of the city.
