We were all very happy that we rented the van, because it allowed us to see a lot more of Naxos. We did a wonderful hike with Trekking Hellas that visited some small, remote villages. We also drove to Panermos for a motor boat tour to Rhina Cave, with Gialitissa boat tours. The Naxos mountains are stunning and we really enjoyed the drive. One note, if you're not used to driving on mountain roads you probably shouldn't drive east of Apeiranthos. Steep roads, switchbacks, and no center line!
