Airport travel guide

Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia, is a charming and compact European city situated on the banks of the Danube River. With its picturesque Old Town with cobblestone streets, historic architecture and the iconic Bratislava Castle perched on a hill, it offers a delightful blend of history and modernity. Visitors to Bratislava can also sample traditional Slovak cuisine, explore its rich cultural heritage, and enjoy panoramic views of the city from the UFO Observation Deck, making it a captivating destination in Central Europe. A city with something for everyone, these are six of its most interesting attractions:
- Bratislava Castle. One of the most impressive in Central Europe, the castle and its surrounding complex is located on a hilltop and provides a view of not just the city below, but also neighboring Austria and even Hungary (allegedly, in good weather). The castle took about 900 years to finish, being completed in the 18th century and has seen a number of reconstructions since, the latest of them just a few years ago. The monumental effort has clearly been worth it.
- St Martin's Cathedral. If Bratislava Castle is the city’s most important former palatial abode of kings, then St. Martin’s Cathedral is arguably its most notable church. Consecrated in 1452, it saw its heyday in the following four centuries when it was the coronation site of no fewer than 11 Hungarian kings. Nowadays, it is one of the most important examples of Gothic architecture in Slovakia.
-
Hrad Devin. The Hrad Devín, or Devin Castle in Bratislava is a magnificent fortress perched high above the confluence of the Danube and Morava Rivers. With its dramatic clifftop location 212 meters high, ancient ruins, and panoramic views, Devin Castle is a captivating historical site that offers a glimpse into Slovakia's rich past and breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.
-
UFO Tower. The UFO Tower in Bratislava is an iconic modern structure that offers visitors a unique perspective of the city. Located at the top of the SNP Bridge over the Danube River, it houses an observation deck and restaurant offering breathtaking panoramic views of Bratislava and its surroundings, making it a popular destination for both locals and tourists.
-
Statues of Bratislava. Bratislava's statues are a whimsical and unexpected part of the city's charm, with sculptures such as Cumil the Peeper and Napoleon's Soldier adding a touch of humor and intrigue to the streets. These statues serve as a testament to Bratislava's creativity and unique character, delighting residents and visitors alike as they explore the city's historic neighborhoods.
- Small Carpathians Wine Route. Stretching from Bratislava in the southwest to the Slovak city of Trnava about 55 km (38 miles) to the northeast, this is one of the most idyllic day trips near the capital. The gentle slopes of Little Carpathians are covered with endless vineyards and there are a number of historic villages and towns in the area, as well as a number of tours you can take (fascinating even if you’re driving and can’t taste the wine).
