Although sometimes labeled as Oslo–Torp, Sandefjord Airport is, in fact, 120 km (75 miles) south of the Norwegian capital. Favored by low-cost airlines, flying here provides an affordable way to travel to one of the world’s priciest regions for budget-conscious travelers. While most who pick up a rental car after landing immediately make their way for Oslo, there are attractions closer to the airport that are potentially worth checking out. Here are three suggestions:

• Sandefjord. The town of Sandefjord itself, located just a 15 minute drive south of the Torp Airport, is a very interesting place to visit! Important in Viking times and later a major whaling center, many of its attractions are tied to these two pages of its history. These include Gaia, a reconstructed – and seaworthy! – 9th century Viking Ship, as well as the Whaling Museum, and Southern Actor, a former whaling ship that’s available for visits during the summer months, but can be seen from outside throughout the year.
• Tønsberg. Travel north towards Oslo, but then make the right turn after about 20 km (12 miles) and you’ll find yourself in Tønsberg, one of the nicest towns in this part of the country! Simultaneously one of the most historic places in Norway and one of the most popular day trip destinations for Norwegian inhabitants and foreign visitors of Oslo, it has ancient Viking mounds and shrines, interesting museums, and a large and lively fjordfront that’s especially enjoyable during the summer months.
• Skrim-Sauheradfjella. Very much off the beaten path and away from human settlements of any notable size, but at the same time accessible to anyone with a rental car, Skrim-Sauheradfjella is a nature reserve about a 90 minute drive from Sandefjord. Although arguably not as mighty as some of Norway’s most famous mountain areas – its highest point reaches 872 m (2,860 feet) – it is a lovely place for long hikes among forested hills, lakes, and an otherwise typical nature landscape of Southern Norway.

The small airport is made up of a single terminal building. All areas of the airport can be easily and quickly accessed on foot.

Sandefjord Airport is located about 10 km (6.2 mi) northeast of the city of Sandefjord, a distance that can be traveled in about ten minutes. Torpveien, Motorway E18 and Motorway Fv305 are the main roads connecting the airport to the city. Sandefjord Airport is about 120 km (75 mi) southwest of Oslo, the capital of Norway.

Although quite small, the airport has a few amenities like ATMs, shops, an information desk, and a children’s play area. The airport is equipped for travelers with reduced mobility (do contact your airline in advance to request assistance for your arrival). The airport closes for the night.

Nearest gas station

Shell gas station at Fokserødveien 19 is 3.5 km (2.1 mi) from the airport, on the way to Sandefjord, and can be reached in about five minutes. This gas station is open 24/7. There are a number of other gas stations near the airport and in Sandefjord.
