Made the drive from Tulum to Valladolid, definitely an interesting drive and while there visited the convent and Ek Balam, both were incredible. Then we did 4 days at the Hard Rock just south of Playa Del Carmen which was amazing as we took some time to drive for tacos in playa… El Fogon is delicious! We then spent four more days in Akumal and stayed at Del Sol, Akumal was great, definitely not the same local experience as Valladolid and you could easily forget your in Mexico as it feels very much like SW Florida, but while there we also took time to see the Dolphins at Puerta Aventuras before flying home. Overall it was a great and relaxing vacation.

We took a week to explore around Tulum, visiting cenotes, Mayan ruins, and of course snorkeling and enjoying the beautiful Yucatán shoreline. We had a relaxed trip, and just enjoyed being together in a gorgeous place.

Big problem is the sargazo seaweed on the beach and in the water.
Makes swimming difficult and very unpleasant.
We never went into the sea.
Also heaps of seaweed on the beach. Bad smell.
This is the really big drawback.
Also very expensive everything. More expensive than Europe.

Tulum is a special place, but note many of the roads are hard, bumpy dirt roads. I would recommend the smallest possible car that would fit your needs.

A lot of sargazo on the beaches. Hotels and beach clubs make a great effort to keep the beaches clean, but there is still a lot of seaweed in the water and beaches.
We highly recommend visiting at least one cenote. We visited Casa Tortuga and it was worth it.
Tulum is a nice destination but the overall price level is very high and in some cases extremely high for what it’s offered. We were expecting a moderate level considering it’s out of season and there is A LOT of sea weed in all the beaches
