We went expecting to be places quicker. The speed limit, coupled with the roads, wind speeds, how many stops to enjoy views of varied natural beauty and a poor knowledge of local customs with regards booking of campsites or accommodation of any kind hinders the schedule much more than you could imagine. Expect everything to take half as long again than you normally do and things become easier. We adapted and changed our schedule to suit, it cost me a tour I'd booked which I'd always wanted to do but disappointment at that was far tucked away and blown away by everything else.

Iceland was amazing- some of the most epic scneary I've ever seen- and some of the most "exciting" driving conditions. My advice is, if you're going in the winter, make sure you have the road.is app installed and check it regularly!

I'd tell them that Reykjavík was very car friendly, and using a hire car is in fact cheaper than the airport bus service and a better value option when looking for the norther lights compared to a bus tour service. Otherwise Iceland is incredible and I'm coming back. I've got nothing negative to say and enjoyed everything I did in the country.

It's worth spending time at the Hot springs, lighthouse that forms part of the diamond circle, 50 km round trip near the airport. The blue lagoon is nearby too so you could book direct with them and go there as part of the diamond tour. The secret lagoon is on the way to gulfoss waterfall after the town Selfoss.. Its a natural hot pool as opposed to the man made blue lagoon. We likened it to the David Lloyd of gyms compared to the secret lagoon being your council run gym! However it's much more authentic, it's clean and friendly but take your own shampoo and conditioner, and be prepared to shower in a row like school showers after PE!.. No cubicles and you have to shower naked, literally no one bat's an eyelid.. it's fine.. The blue lagoon have doors to the showers and nice shampoo and conditioner and hand held hairdryers! Get a list of where the tours go before you leave, then go see them on your own timescale. There's a lot of driving to be done to tick off the main tourist sites. Get up early, remember it doesn't get light till gone 0900 and gets dark at 4 ish. Data Roaming is free on vodaphone so we didn't need a sat nav. Phone signal is brilliant throughout South Iceland (didn't go north so can't comment) we did reykjavík to Vik and back and clocked up more than 250 miles in a day! The darcia duster is a bit heavy on the juice so see if they have a diesel. I wouldn't hesitate to use this company again but Iceland has been ticked off the bucket list! Throughly recommend them though.
