My advice is to book a hybrid and save money on fuel. With the car, we were able to reach places that are not (or not easily) accessible by public transport. Highlights included the mirador (viewpoint) at Caldera Taburiente from Los Muchachos (to the North) and from the Visitor Centre (from the South). Walks in the Cubo de Galga and Los Tilos forests were magical (despite the rain). The Salinas and Faro de Fuencaliente (salt pans and lighthouse) are worth visiting - very nice cafe/restaurant too. The cave dwellings and exhibition at El Tendal is very interesting with an excellent knowledgeable guide - another nice cafe/restaurant. Main roads to the west of the island are still under repair following the volcanic eruption along the Cumbre Vieja ridge in 2021, so driving is quite slow with lots of roadworks. There is some compensation by having views of the Tajogaite vent. During May, village and town crosses and shrines are beautifully dressed with flowers, ribbons and paper decorations. Roads on the island to the numerous miradors are very circuitous, even torturous in places so only for confident drivers.
