The trip was great. 9 nights in Madeira in total but for the first 5 we stayed in Funchal and no vehicle was needed. Rented a car due to the location of where we were moving onto and the rural, mountain area of Sao Vincente. The cars took us through the clouds, up steep hills into the mountains.

Madiera is very busy peak season with tourists. It was like a car park wherever we went that was slightly touristy, you can try and be clever but even leaving the hotel one morning at 6 for sunrise we still encountered over 300 cars at the summit. Would recommend the azores more.

Thoroughly recommend Madeira. It's absolutely stunning - however that does inevitably mean that the driving is a little bit on the hairy side at times (especially with LH drive novices!)! Given all those tunnels I dread to think how one would get by without automatic headlights!!

Madeira is a great place to explore nature, particularly the many waterfalls and the vista points. Food is also great almost everywhere. the local restaurants are the best, and it s not needed to book in advance to find a space. Maybe you wait 10 mins, but you will be served.

The toboggan run into Funchal was a highlight, and the cable car up to the start was great. Drove to the lava pools in Porto Moniz from our villa above Ponta Do Sol and can't believe how quick and easy it was to travel the island. Whale/dolphin watching also recommended.

We chose to stay at Porto Moniz rather than Funchal and did not regret it, the sea there is spectacular and the natural pools idyllic. We had a very relaxing stay, went on 1 levada walk (Alecrim) again, beautiful and not at all strenuous. The roads are good.

Car parking in Madeira was quite cheap and therefore do not worry about using a car park. Some of the car parks can be quite tight, therefore if you are not confident driving a left-hand drive car then hire a smaller vehicle.

Renting a car to explore Madeira is a great option if you prefer not to travel in group - coach tours and allows you to stop & start your journey on your terms & time.
The scenery is jaw-dropping on the island, so being able to pull over into safe stopping areas to admire the views and travel in & out of areas at your own pace & time of day is priceless.

In Funchal.. stick to the main routes as the hilly terrain where some local roads are near vertical to drive up can be difficult to navigate.. so don't always rely on Google map..

Madeira is s wonderful place I have visited several times now and would recommend hiring a car to everyone as there is so much to see.
I recommend that you don't get the cheapest as the small engine has trouble getting up the very steep hills, I only made this mistake once.

Madeira is a beautiful island to explore by car, their are some very small roads and lots of tunnels (The tunnels are safe and wide). The local drivers sometimes take rules as advice rather than law, but they are mostly laid back and polite and give tourists leeway.
