Airport travel guide

Kansas City is a large city in western Missouri near the border with Kansas (it is not actually in Kansas as you may think). Widely known for its barbecue and jazz history, Kansas City is a popular tourist destination. Of course, if you plan to leave the Downtown area or venture further into Missouri or Kansas, you'll definitely want a rental car.
The airport used to be called Mid-continent International, which is where it gets its IATA code. Many now call it KCI, though.

- Cancun, Mexico
- Toronto, Canada
Main airlines
Air Canada, Alaska, Allegiant, American, Delta, Frontier, JetBlue, Southwest, Spirit, and United all serve Kansas City International Airport.
Terminals
There are currently two terminals at the airport, B (gates 31-60) and C (gates 61-90). The latter serves international flights. Terminal A is scheduled to be reopened after reconstruction in 2023.
Location
The airport is located roughly 20 miles north of Downtown Kansas City. It takes about 25 minutes to drive there (or a little more if it's rush hour). I-434 connects the airport with the northwestern suburbs and I-35. Lawrence, Kansas is about a 45-minute drive away.
Most popular types of rental car
- SUVs - from $73 per day
- Small cars - from $122 per day
- Medium cars - from $119 per day
- Large cars - from $68 per day
- Premium cars - from $81 per day
- Vans - from $94 per day
- Convertibles - from $161 per day
Car rental desks
All of the rental desks are located on the grounds of the airport but require a shuttle to reach. The shuttle is the same for all of them and leaves from the median outside the terminal (you'll see signs for it).
Services and facilities
Kansas City International has all the services and facilities you would expect of an airport its size. There is a Starbucks in both terminals, and both terminals have fast-food restaurants, bars, and full-service restaurants. There are shops in both terminals, too. You'll find free wifi, restrooms, nursing mothers' rooms, and a dog relief area, too.
Nearest gas station
There's a Phillips 66 station right at the airport, making it simple to fill up your rental before returning it. Its prices are roughly in line with other stations in the area if not slightly higher. There are also stations at each of the two exits from I-29 before the airport (when coming from downtown Kansas City).
