Lava flow beaches, cloud topped mountains, dripping forests of tree ferns, thermal pools of all varieties, steam rising from the ground, even out of walls along the roadside; all to be found amongst green fields, herds of cows and seemingly infinite numbers of hydrangeas. Warm but not ridiculously hot; good weather but not always consistent. Relaxed, friendly, accessible but not touristy.

I don't think you need to rend a car if you're visiting Sao Miguel, but definitely helps if you want to see as much as possible in a relatively short space of time.
