São Miguel is an incredible destination for nature lovers. The boat trip to see dolphins and whales is a must (but take travel sickness tablets beforehand!). Go with the smaller tour companies such as Moby Dick, located in the main harbour area of Ponta Delgada, as you will be supporting a small family business.
Go swimming in the natural thermal pools in Ferraria, then watch the sunset in Mosteiros.
Santa Barbara beach is fantastic, with great facilities and accessibility.
Miradouro Santa Iria on the north coast has the best panoramic views of the ocean.

Thoroughly enjoyed Sao Miguel in the Azores. We like hiking and enjoyed quite a few lovely walks in various places in the island. Helps to sometimes just go to a village and see if they have a walking trail to follow, we found a fantastic waterfall walk and a coastal walk not too far from Maia.

It was great. Renting out a car for Sao Miguel is essential, and we would not have had such a great time without the use of the rental car.

Sao Miguel is an amazing island. I used the car to get me to the various hiking trails around the island. Hiking in the Azores is great - lots of clearly marked trails, beautiful scenery and amazing nature. The visitazores website has all the information you need, including maps you can download to your phone. There are also a lot of open-water sea swimming locations around the island where you can swim safely. I was there in December/January - the sea is a bit cold but still swimmable.

To my opinion the diesel engine would suit better in such an place like Azores. No high speed highways but a lot of hills.
