NZ can only be seen properly by using car. Outside the two big cities public transport is more or less non existent. We were able to see all the main sights of North Island using the hire car. Warning...in rural areas roads are tricky and local driving is often bad

Having a car made it so easy to get around, especially in towns like rotorua and taupo when it is easiest to drive. We loved waitomo and hobbiton! And visited national park also to do the tongariro crossing, would highly recommend this!
