Located in the foothills of the majestic Atlas Mountains, Marrakesh is perhaps the most fascinating city in North Africa. Although developed and friendly toward western tourist, it retains much of its original mystique and offers a mix of famous landmarks and hidden gems. These are three of its most interesting attractions:

• Djemaa El-Fna. The large market place and old town is the beating heart of Marrakesh and is definitely its most impressive attraction. While you might initially be overwhelmed by the sounds, smells, snake charmers, musicians, and merchants, walking around this area, especially after dark, is an experience like no other. Many of Marrakesh’s most atmospheric (and budget-friendly) hotels are also in the area.
• Kutubiyya Mosque. Famous for its traders and entertainers, Marrakesh is also an ancient city of learning and famous in the Arab world for its madrassas, or religious schools, and studies of the Quran. This heritage is best emphasized by the beautiful Kutubiyya Mosque — more than 800 years old, it dominates both the city’s skyline and social and religious history. The mosque is near Djemaa El-Fna and is surrounded by beautiful gardens which are lovely to explore on a sunny day.
• Majorelle Garden. While Arabic is one of the two official languages of Morocco and French continues to have a large influence, many inhabitants of Marrakesh and the rest of Morocco are native Berber or Amazigh speakers. An ancient people with rich culture and art, they are worth learning more about, and the best place to do that is the Berber Museum which is located in the landscape garden of Majorelle. A large green area near the city centre, the garden is also home to the Islamic Art Museum and Yves Saint Laurent Museum which is dedicated to the famous French fashion designer.

Location

Marrakesh Airport is about 5 km (3.1 miles) from Marrakesh's city centre. It takes approximately 15 minutes by car to get from the airport to Jamaa el-Fna, depending on traffic. Avenue Prince Moulay Rachid is the main road connecting the airport to the city.

Most car hire desks are located in the arrivals hall of Terminal 1.

Services and facilities

You’ll find currency exchange offices, a cashpoint in the arrivals hall of Terminal 2, a restaurant, café, snack bar, gift shops, duty-free shops, and an information desk. Marrakesh Airport also has a prayer room and an emergency unit that provides medical assistance. Unfortunately, facilities for people with disabilities are limited, so, if these are needed, you should make special arrangements with your airline in advance.

Nearest petrol station

The nearest petrol station is on Avenue 11 Janvier. There are also two other petrol stations nearby, one at Route d’Essaouira and the other at Place Moulay Ali, Medina.
