We had an overall good trip in Montenegro and it was made more practical with a rental car. We went to beautiful nature spots and enjoyed hiking. Unfortunately, the weather was not always on our side.

We visited Kotor and Lake Skadar, both very beautiful. General impression of driving in Montenegro - it’s not easy. The roads are frequently narrow and not great quality. There are less rules than in the UK and you have to expect the unexpected.

We travelled around Montenegro for 9 days and drove a total of 860km, rented a manual Skoda Fabia and spent a total of EUR50 in petrol. Some roads in Montenegro can be narrow (specially inland), so maybe a full coverage insurance might be a good option to consider. Amazing country to travel around. Very safe, people super friendly and good food. We went in mid-April, considered low season, so a lot less tourists than expected, very lucky with the weather. Some places and restaurants were still closed, and preparing to open for the summer season, but this wasn't an issue. Most places accept card payments, but would recommend to keep some cash in your pocket, specially countryside. We also got a data SIM card (easily purchased in phone shops (airport and Kotor old town had a few), paid EUR10 for 400Gb and coverage was great in most part of the country. Some places we travelled and recommend would be Kotor, Budva and Sveti Stefan. Tivat is nice and maybe consider Strand von Dobrec and Rose. Skadar Lake is amazing and nice for kayaking. The road along the lake towards border with Albania is narrow but very beautiful. Drove north towards Ostrog Monastery, with stops in Rijeka bridge and Pavlova Strana. Then towards Durmitor National Park for 2 amazing days for hiking around Black Lake, Zmijinje Lake, Jablan and zip line in the Tara Bridge (on the way drove pass Vrazje and Riblje glacier lakes). Drove to the beautiful Lovcen and then through Serpentine back to Kotor. Will definitely go back.
