Airport travel guide
A mixture of Caribbean and French heritage, Martinique is one of the most interesting places to visit in the region. Its colorful capital, Fort-de-France, is a delight in its own right but also provides easy access to some of the island’s loveliest nature. These are four of the island’s most interesting attractions:
- Fort Saint Louis. A seaside fortification dating back as early as 1638, this is perhaps the most notable historical structure in Fort-de-France. Despite its respectable age, it remains an active naval base, but parts of it are open to tourists and can be visited on a tour. Standing over Fort-de-France Bay and providing views of the sea below, the area is also home to a thriving green iguana colony. There are several other notable forts in and around the island’s capital.
- Balata Garden. Martinique is home to some stunning Caribbean nature, and some of it can be enjoyed without leaving the Fort-de-France area! Although not especially old — it dates back to the early 1980s — Balata is the most notable botanical garden in Martinique and features tropical plants both endemic to the island and from around the world, not least its collection of 300 different species of palms. Balata is north of the city center and can be reached by car in about 20 minutes.
- Regional Nature Park. Taking up a large portion of the island’s northwest, this is the most notable nature preserve of Martinique. Recognized as one of the 34 biodiversity hotspots on the planet, its wetlands, islets, and beaches are home to plenty of species of flora and fauna not found anywhere else in the world; popular inhabitants include the ravine rocket frog, pink toe tarantula, and Martinique oriole. The drive to the nearest corner of the park from Fort-de-France takes only about 15 minutes.
- Sainte-Anne. Located at the far southern end, Sainte-Anne is perhaps what most foreigners havee in mind when they think of Martinique - a tropical beach paradise. In addition to its splendid, sandy coastline, the little town is also near the Salines Pond protected wetland. A car trip from Fort-de-France to Sainte-Anne takes about one hour.
