Airport travel guide

Serving the second city of Estonia, Tartu Ülenurme is one of the smallest international airports in Europe. As of October 2024, it provides one connection to the Finnish capital of Helsinki, with about two flights taking off a day. Tartu is also an up-and-coming travel destination, having been the European Capital of Culture in 2024, an honor it shared with Bad Ischl in Austria and Bodø in Norway. These are three of the city’s most interesting attractions:
- Estonian National Museum. Dedicated to the local traditions, material culture, and folklore, this is one of the best places in the country to learn more about all things Estonian. In addition to this heritage, the museum is also focused on other Finno-Ugric peoples including Finns, Hungarians, and several smaller ethnic groups in Russia. The former director of the museum, Alar Karis, is the current president of Estonia.
- The Science Center of AHHAA. Rightly considered the pride of the city, the AHHAA is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Tartu. Interactive and modern, it is a great place to visit for the whole family, with exhibitions on various topics related to science and technology, as well as its own planetarium and 4D Adventure Cinema. The museum is affiliated with the University of Tartu and frequently hosts various public events. Visit its official website to learn more.
- Lake Peipus. Forming the border with Russia, Lake Peipus (or Peipsi järv, as it is known in Estonian) is the fifth-largest lake in Europe, with the Estonian shoreline alone taking up several hundred kilometers. Formed when the glaciers of the last Ice Age receded, it is nowadays a rather remote part of the country with no large nearby towns, but that only adds to its rugged natural beauty. The area is known for its diverse birdlife, as well as the hiking trails that zigzag the coastal forests. From Tartu, the town of Kallaste is only a 45-minute drive to the northeast and therefore easily reachable as a day trip.
