We had a fantastic time along the central Pacific coast of Costa Rica. If you have any intent to go off the primary highway or central portions of the towns along the coast, we'd recommend a 4x4. Most roads off the highway are dirt roads and enter into the mountains almost immediately west of the primary highway. Lots of "4x4 only" signs on roads.
