The capital of Ceará, over the last decade Fortaleza has transformed from being a primarily domestic tourism destination to also being known to foreign visitors. In addition to its splendid coast, the city also offers interesting lessons in the culture of Northeast Brazil and its inhabitants. These are four of Fortaleza’s most interesting attractions:

• Metropolitan Cathedral of Fortaleza. Known as Igreja da Sé in Portuguese, the main cathedral of Fortaleza is quite an imposing building - and one of the most famous in the city. Built to resemble the famous Cologne Cathedral in Germany, its two towers reach the height of 75 meters (245 feet). 
• Dragão do Mar Cultural Center. Located in the busiest part of the city, this is one of the most notable cultural institutions of Fortaleza. A complex of attractions, it includes an art museum, a cinema, and even a planetarium. The center is named in honor of a famous Brazilian abolitionist.
• Beaches. Perhaps unusually for a metropolis of more than four million inhabitants (although entirely fitting in Brazil), Fortaleza is home to several splendid beaches. Two of the nicest ones are Iracema Beach and Meireles Beach - these are located next to each other, immediately to the northeast of the city center. There are many other lovely and less busy beach spots around Fortaleza that you can reach with a rental car, though make sure to consult locals before heading out to them to make sure you end up in a nice place.
• Theatro José de Alencar. Another iconic Fortaleza building, the theater dates back to the early 20th century and was built in a primarily Art Nouveau style. Nowadays, it still houses a theater and hosts frequent shows, but also provides home to the Center for the Arts Scenic (CENA), as well as several arts galleries and studios.

Location

Fortaleza Airport is about 11 km (7 mi) south of the city center of Fortaleza, the capital of Ceará state. Motorway CE-401/CE-501, Av. Luciano Carneiro, and R. Jaime Benévolo are the main roads connecting the airport to the city.

There are also ATMs, a currency exchange, first aid services, a pharmacy, baby changing facilities, a luggage wrapping service, a lost and found office, a chapel, and a post office. Fortaleza Airport facilities are equipped for travelers with reduced mobility, and special assistance is available, but you should contact your airline in advance if you’d like this service.

Nearest gas station

BR Aviation Distribuidora, located at Av. Bernardo Manuel, 7142a–Fatima, can be reached in about three minutes. There are many other gas stations near the airport and on the way to the city.
