Airport travel guide

Timeless Yerevan is one of the oldest cities in the region and has layers upon layers of fascinating history to explore. Just as interestingly though, it is also a hub of contemporary culture, as well as a gateway to many other destinations in Armenia. These are four of the most interesting attractions in and around it:
- Churches. Armenia was the first country on the planet to adopt Christianity as its state religion – this happened in the year 301 – and the Armenian Apostolic Church remains central to the local identity. Time has obliterated some of the earliest houses of prayer, but many other impressive churches remain, not least the 13th-century Katoghike Holy Mother of God Church and the mighty St. Gregory the Illuminator Church which was finished in 2001.
- History Museum. Inhabited since long before the birth of Christianity, Armenia has seen the rise and fall of some of history's most notable empires, and there’s no better place to learn about this than the capital’s History Museum. There is a special focus on Urartu, the Iron Age Kingdom that preceded the birth of Armenia, as well as on Roman, Parthian, Byzantine, and other heritage. Visit the museum’s English-language website to learn more.
- Yerevan Opera and Ballet Theatre. Also known as the Alexander Spendiaryan Opera Theatre after the father of the Armenian national symphonic music, the opera theater is another iconic building in the capital. Having celebrated its 90th birthday in 2023, it is a recognizable feature of Yerevan’s skyline and frequently hosts various concerts – for a truly memorable experience, it's worth trying to catch a show during your visit to the city.
- Lake Sevan. The highland lake of Sevan is a place of both great natural beauty and strong symbolic significance for Armenia, so most visitors to the country try to see it at least once. Home to several ancient monasteries, the lake is also a great place for hiking, kayaking, and paddle boarding (SUP). The town of Sevan, located on its northwestern shore, is just over an hour’s drive from the capital, and it is a great base if you’re looking to go skiing in nearby Tsaghkadzor. Lake Sevan is also a stone’s throw from Dilijan National Park, a must for every nature-lover.
