Located in the north-central portion of Sweden, the town of Östersund doesn’t see too many foreign visitors, but those who come will discover a wonderfully underrated destination with lots of stunning nature around it. These are three of the most interesting attractions in the area:

• Jamtli. A genuinely interesting open air museum, Jamtli is dedicated to all things Jämtland, the historical county in which Östersund is located (which is nowadays a part of Norrland, the larger province). In addition to some genuinely diverse expositions that includes everything from local tapestries to a section dedicated to the region’s most famous lake monster (more on that below), the family-friendly museum frequently hosts various cultural performances and events. • Storsjöodjuret. A legend rather than a landmark, Storsjöodjuret literally translates from Swedish as the Great Lake Monster and is the undoubted protagonist of the local mythology. First mentioned in writing in the 17th century and variously described as something between a cat, a dragon, and a troll, its existence remains unconfirmed, but that has not stopped the city putting several monuments dedicated to it, one of which on the coast of the Storsjön Lake, its supposed dwelling place and one of the nicest bodies of water in the town (there is also a runestone dating back to the 11th century that allegedly shows the monster and is put on a public display. In the 1980s, the local city council had even put Storsjöodjuret on the protected species list, although the decision has since been reversed.
• Åre. Located about a 75 minute drive away, Åre is another important place in Jämtland – in fact, the official airport name is Åre–Östersund. Located near the Norwegian border, it is one of Sweden’s most famous skiing and snowboarding destinations, and also turns into a hiker paradise every summer. The village of Åre only has the permanent population of about three thousand, but punches way above its weight for the stunning mountain scenery immediately to its west.

Location

Östersund Airport is about 11 km (6.8 mi) northwest of Östersund. Rödövägen, Vallaleden, and Frösöbron are the main roads connecting the airport to the city, and the airport is centralized for many of the best places to visit in Sweden.

You’ll find a restaurant and a couple of small kiosks and stores, including duty-free outlets. There’s also a pay lounge, a nearby hotel, and luggage storage facilities inside the airport terminal. Östersund Airport offers assistance to travelers with reduced mobility, but make sure to contact your airline in advance for information about what kind of help this includes.

Nearest gas station

An INGO gas station at Mjällevägen 1 can be reached in about six minutes and is open 24/7. There are other gas stations near the airport and in the city.
